Hey guys!

Patreon keeps getting on me about how my give-away for the $10+ tier breaks their terms and services so I've been trying to think of something to replace it with and have a few ideas. Whenever I paint something, there's a lot of footage that I leave out. Maybe I could do an extended cut of each painting video so you could see more of the process? Another idea is to do painting PDFs for each mini that I paint; a nice concise guide as to the paints I used and the steps I took. Do you guys have an ideas for suitable replacements?

I feel like this is a long time coming because only a very small % of people benefit from the giveaway and that's not fun!

I’m a big fan of painting PDFs, especially ones that give insight into each step (why the color choice, why the highlight placement, etc.)

I agree with the comment above about the PDFs. I would love an in-depth guide.

I'd say do the options that represent the least additional time and effort for you, in the end the reason we back you is so you can continue putting out awesome video!

What’s the tos issue? That you do a giveaway? That seems kind of dumb to be upset over you doing something nice for us. Have you talked to anyone at Patreon about it or just got auto emails? I really like pdf stuff. For me, I know I’m in the strong minority but I’d love to see some in’s and out’s of your filming and editing and some more behind the scenes stuff. I also enjoy input on your experiences and adventures.

Either one is a solid option, I lean a little more toward extended videos but only if that doesn't get in the way of making new videos.

The problem is that the reward is a "gamble". You pay money for the chance to win something, which is an entirely apt description of what it is, so I can see where they're coming from. I also love BTS video content! Do the BTS posts not work for ya?

miniac

My hope was that the videos gave that kind of insight, and the PDFs would be a quick reference as to what happened in the video. So, instead of flipping through a 20 minute video to find 1 step, you could look at 1-2 pages and find it much more quickly. Does that work or no?

miniac

Could you answer my question to the above comment as well so I get everyone's opinion, please :)

Is the PDFs not going to be a mega amount of work vs just putting out the uncut videos?

As a newer painter, I am very much into the PDF idea.

miniac

I feel like the extended cuts will be easier, but the PDFs will provide more value to patrons. The extended cuts are easier because I already know how to video edit, and the footage is right there in my video project. I have very little idea on how to make quality PDFs, so I'll need to learn, but I assume once I get a template going, it'll be easy? Not sure!

Scott, they might work, I just didn’t know they’re there because I’m always so busy my self. Also currently in Florida

I vote for hugs for everyone.

Love the Ikea of the pdfs its easyer for a reference while painting imo.

The PDF guides sound like a great idea

Anonymous

I also like the PDF idea! I’d also add just please make sure you run them through OCR so they’re accessible for everybody.

Anonymous

That’s a bummer, but I get it. I dunno what the best route is, I probably won’t be painting the same minis you do because they’re so tiny, but pdf guides of colors and techniques could still be valuable for other painting projects. Go for it!

I like the video idea. I have always learned more from watching a video than reading something and looking at pictures.

Anonymous

I like the PDF option as I like to read and they will make an excellent quick reference

I'm into the idea of either extended cut or PDF. In regard to the tos and "gambling", could you offer the chance to win a mini to everyone and with more "entries" for the higher level patrons?

Anonymous

The PDF idea is great :) I hope that you will go with that idea ^^

miniac

Basically, any paid advantage or exclusivity is a no-no. I went through a lot of rounds of emails with my last patreon rep trying to find a solution. If the give-away was available to everyone (youtube viewers included) equally, then it'd be fine bu then it wouldn't be a valuable reward tier.

I think the PDFs are great ideas.

Just having access to the Discord and all of the Discord glory is awesome at the $10 tear I think that more off the benefits of $10+ tears could be achieved by putting the energy into side projects there that benefit every one or each tear of Patreon more I also feel that your community and I want to help you become more prolific and successful then just being a patreon like helping donate to making raffles a thing and painting competitions a consistent thing I am down to promote and help raise money to develop your miniac brand into something even bigger we all want it to grow and see you receive more long term sponsorship from bigger brands. The reason I’m saying all off this is because I think all of your YouTube videos are great and you are doing a better and better job each time you make a new one so you should just keep focusing on making them better and better they same way you all ready do add the new content to the videos themselves for everyone because it makes us patreons fell like we are making more of a difference in supporting your entire growth and success as a content creator. I don’t think you should take any time at all out off your filming and editing to make side projects because you should go full bore at making the best YouTube videos possible because as your supporters I know we believe in your great work that much.

I’m more interested in extended videos than PDF. What I’d really like to see more behind the scenes unedited videos, these give more inside into your creative process than this colour on this spot. I really get a kick out of seeing the inspirational stuff like sketches, referencing images and I saw one painter who takes a black an white photos and then plays with colours on cheap print out and this has been hugely helpful for me and I never would have thought of it on my own. Do something you enjoy and share it with us.

I love the idea of the PDF. So many things can be gathered from that. But, I mean....we give you the patronage because we love being told what to do when you yell at us to Paint. More. Mini's! It's the balance of life....

Some time ago we chatted about the PDF either here or on your disc and I still really like that idea. A little mini guide with photos at steps and details on paints used and stuff. Total win.

Swag. Big reason why I signed up for the $10. Loving the discord, but maybe a swag package once every quarter? I'd also like to see some kind of 'master study' where you take a painter and break down their style, similar to 'eavy metal, and paint a mini in that style.

Anonymous

Pretty cool idea is the extended video. I like watching what you do, your methods and the such. Going forward maybe you could show stuff that inspired your current paint scheme.

I wanted to subscribe at the $10 tier but didn't see enough of a value differentiator at the time. If there were additional content I would certainly consider that. One thing that would work for me personally is if you could secure discounts on supplies like paints etc. A deal of the month could certainly compel me to upgrade.

I would upgrade to Dark Wizard for extended cut videos for sure! I was thinking about upgrading to Dark Wizard anyhow since this channel has been such an influential part of my hobbying motivation, but having something like this would easily help tip the scales. I prefer watching more even unedited footage, mistakes, you being a dork, stuff like that over a PDF. Concise guides to exact paints you used is less useful than just watching you. I learn more by just being exposed to watching people paint. I'm better at blending when I'm not just doing contrast paint for the contrast god thanks to just watching your videos sitting there doing blends and highlights. I love the long focused videos where you have multiple camera angles too.

Anonymous

I think a painting PDF like the one you mentioned would be a fantastic replacement! And the extended cut would be nice.

Anonymous

I really like the PDF guide idea, also the articles you write about your experiments with paint are also very interesting so, for me, $10 a month is well worth it just to help you keep making content. Your videos are the reason I even started painting and they're my go to when I need to learn another technique. Whatever you decide to do is totally worth it for me.

Do patreon not like people doing give aways of an item then? Fair enough. I'm liking idea of extra content, seems fair if people are paying more to see that bit extra.

miniac

Patreon doesn't like it because it's a little bit too much like gambling.
