Hello all,

The recent poll has finished, and the three winners this time were the abbey orc occupation scene from the last release, the newest Cliohna x Rowan scene, and the Alexia whipping scene. These will be added to the CG list for next month as usual.

Work is well underway as usual, and the release should be out on Saturday as planned.

Moving on, I've been feeling pretty burned out lately, and while I haven't let this affect the game, it hasn't been great for me personally. I've been making this game for over three years now while working a full time job, and sometimes it gets a bit much. With the comparatively high cost and continual slow growth of SoC, it looks very unlikely that I will be able to quit my job any time soon, and so there are two things I have been considering to make things easier for me. I stress considering because neither of these have been decided, both are just options at this point.

Moving to Bi-Monthly Releases

We've been doing monthly releases on time now for a while, and it hasn't made much difference. I'd like to think that they do, but when I look around our industry and see some much bigger names putting out releases consistently late, every 3-6 months, it seems more likely people care more about the content than consistency.

One of the criticisms the game gets is that releases tend to seem small / inconsequential, but that is because it takes a lot of work to write, edit, and code around twenty thousand words in just under four weeks. If we did move to bi-monthly releases, it would make things easier not only for me, but also for the rest of the staff. We'd still commission the same amount of work every month, you'd just get one double sized release bi-monthly, as opposed to the current release schedule.

Selling the Game

Another thing I could do is sell the game on steam, which hopefully would help with funding. However as long as it is available for free, this is a non-starter. We had planned to make a unity version and sell that, however when we looked into it, it seemed like an expensive, time consuming task that wasn't really worth it.

Therefore to sell the game, we'd have to discontinue the free version, otherwise people would have no reason to purchase it. I'm not a huge fan of this idea, but it is one option for the future. (EDIT: some people seem to be misunderstanding this one - there'd still be a backer version every month, there just wouldn't be free releases anymore)

That's it for today, I'll continue to ponder on what to do going forward. As I said, I may do both those things, I may do neither, I just wanted to be transparent with you all because you support me, and I feel there's too much obfuscation, and sometimes downright dishonesty in game dev. Whatever happens though, I'll still be here chugging along just as I always have been, so don't worry. :)

I feel that you should move to Steam. This will give you more finance and ability to commit. And if some people want to support you beyond purchasing the game, they can do so on patreon.

Keith

I feel that Steam is the way to go IF it makes you team more focused on completing a game. The issue with Patreon is most of the time we support creators only to see games left unfinished or slowly progressing over years. I would actually prefer paying once for a complete game than the patreon tip jar style format.

Noctum28

I would be fine with bi-monthly releases to reduce the stress on the developers. Regarding Steam: putting the free version as Early Access on Steam might help the game to gain visibility.

Requiem

I think you should do what's right by you. If you burn out and don't finish, there will be a lot of frustration and regret for yourself and from everyone who has supported SoC. If that means I have to wait a year before another release, but that release is a complete, finished game, then I will be happy to do so. I would only ask that for those who have given support here on Patreon, the game be free, or at least hugely discounted.

ArtNstory

I would not mind if production were to shift to a bi-monthly basis. The quality of work the entire team puts out is very high. It takes time and dedication. That being said, I'm divided between wanting to keep up on progress and wanting to keep at least some of the game hidden until experiencing the content in-game. For instance I really like the insight provided by the new sketch notes but would be fine seeing them an update or two after those parts have been live. As far as Steam goes, I think offering a demo or a teaser version may be a viable option. It would give the unfamiliar a chance to see what SoC is all about while maintaining the benefits of everyone who has supported it.

Steam is a more stable income but it has it limitations censor vise. The free version can always be replaced with demo or limited version that gives the player a feel of what they would buy. Also there is an option of chapter selling. Steam has a lot of those. So you could make a steady profit and be less stressed about deadlines and release dates. Patreon supporters could get already released parts for free and get free goodies, while steam users would need to buy art/cg's , guides and etc

Bi-monthly sounds fine, even moreso if it helps reduce strain. Bigger jumps are certainly important, because that's what gets old fans back into it and talking, and consequently nabs you more. Regularity still matters, but if you do it bi-monthly that's still regular. Not sure how well selling it and scratching the free version would go over with people, hard to gauge, but I'd say it's on the riskier side for you. Selling a Unity-version wuld make more sense in that Unity games are easy to port to other platforms (say Android for example), but I agree that it seems like a lot of work for little pay-off for a game like yours. Not like you'll get it onto the Switch, where all the money is. :P I see no issue with a paid/backer version and one that only has the first (few?) chapters in it though. Ongoing financing is always a huge issue for projects like this unless you already have an established and dedicated fanbase or some way of generating hype, which is very hard to control (because the internet do as the internet do) even if you have an experienced social media manager.

Bi monthly sounds like a pretty good fix for making things less stressful. Personally I think you should make a demo version of the game and have that available for download. Something that's big enough to show off a good chunk of the starting area, hook people with that. This has grown beyond being a simple free game in my opinion. You'll have pushback with slashing the full free version but this game has many hours of content and rewards multiple playthroughs. It deserves to have some money thrown at it.

I vote for bi-monthly.

Bi-monthly is fine

Bi-monthly

Funny, I discovered this game a week ago, haven't been around to playing it yet but started following you since you made a free version. Since I already support a big number of creators which drain my money fairly quickly, this will probably be of short term (shortest ever for me). Just for the record, not complaining, you do you, and I get that it takes money to make stuff. I just found it a funny coincidence that this happened just after I discovered the game. I just don't make enough money myself to support more creators at the moment.

Zaths

I'd go even further than Bi-Monthly. I'm playing every three to four months just to have enough to go through instead of starting all over just for a couple CGs. So I'd still pledge if you took more time to release as long as you keep me posted on progress. Then again, I'm just a tier 1 patreon.

Bi-monthly sounds fine and you really should just do the change to that format. If you are felling burnt out now doing even more work is not going to change that.

Anonymous

Yes to Steam, you should get paid for your work.

I would absolutely buy this game on steam. There's plenty of content here to easily warrant a $10 price tag.

Anonymous

Dont see a problem in both options. I'd say even to make a release once in 3 months is not a problem. Now the difference between versions is so small, that I download it every 3-6 months...

Funky Munky

I have no problem if you discontinued development of the free version. It would effectively still be a rather substantial demo version as it currently stands, and you can publish updates and completed versions to steam. As for frequency of updates.... well, whatever works most effectively for your team to get the best product out they can. If dropping to bi-monthly means less rushing and pressure, then so be it

squarenuts

Why not the Epic Games Store where they take a smaller cut than Steam?

JoeDoe

I expect the development to go slower and slower as well, since you have to take more and more into account the further along you get. If progress feel inconsequential with each release now, I expect that it's only gonna get "worse" simply by the nature of the game. Less frequent releases might be necessary if this is a concern.

If you put it on steam I totally witll buy it

I'm at the $20 a month level and I have mixed feelings about making my monthly investment available for a 1 shot discount on Steam or Epic Games. That being said, I think my end conclusion is that I'm pledging that much because that's how I value your updates and communication with us; not because it's fair on the crowd funding level. Some patreons might be put off, though (observe the uproar over Shadow of the Tomb Raider’s post-release discount). Opening SoC up to one-time buyers would be an unfortunate business decision if it lost you more Patreon support than you gained from the extra exposure. The Early Release market on Steam is savage. On the burn-out side of things, I agree with Simmons711. Moving to a bi-monthly schedule but putting the same demands on yourself and your crew might not make much of a difference. You might consider moving to a 40-day or 5 week schedule and keeping your release goals as they are for the monthlies? That would give you actual time off! My final thoughts are on your market share. I’m not a game developer or producer but I have played (tried to play) some of the games which have more support than SoC and I’m consistently underwhelmed. I know you’re in touch with the development community out there, what have they said about getting that market share? One thought would be putting together some kind of video/slide show of your favorite Sommies, putting it to music, and posting it on Pornhub or something since it’s like the 5th most visited website in the world. I don’t know what they charge to have videos uploaded, though.

SubVerse

I cannot get PayPal to go through, I helped fund this game for about a year until I got a new card and suddenly patreon and PayPal didn't want to take my payments anymore and so I've been forced to wait for releases and not contribute anything. :/ I'd DEFINITELY buy this game on Steam 10 times over just to see the series grow and continue to give back, no question, I think it'd be the smart move personally.

Pantera

Bi-monthly releases to give you a break while still providing decent updates sounds like a good idea to me. This is assuming we still get some regular art, story and game progress updates. I'm all for a steam version to support your efforts and provide more exposure if you keep the patron rewards. I love the world and characters you've created and look forward to seeing them evolve.

Hi Pan, There will be no changes with how we operate in the regular basis as arioch will still post the teasers and do regular reports on what's the current status :). The only change will be the release schedule. So every release will have 16 new cgs + the variants and 2 months worth of writing. :)

November

Go Bi-Monthly. It sounds like it would be easier on the staff. It would be more likely than getting enough cash from sales to replace all the full-time jobs of the staff.

Bi monthly vote here and take care of yourself:)

Bi-Monthly. Creativity needs room to breathe. Lighten the load, carry this project through to fruition, and with the expertise you gain, keep your next project in mind. Perhaps your next project will be the one that lets you quit your job! I think that if you can finish this project while maintaining a sustainable, enjoyable workload, it will be a huge step towards independence.

From Beyond

So if you sell it on Steam and I buy the game, will I get updates permanently?

TheJackinati

Does this mean that bisexual content will be release monthly instead of Bi-monthly? ;P

Anonymous

We're still deliberating on the decision to what constitutes as a steam release. It's not really an immediate solution to the development cycle tbh.

Alan H

For me personally I wouldn't mind the bi-monthly releases since when I play it it will seem like more has been added to the game at each release

Khaz

As long as this game continues to be the pinnacle of gaming it is, you will have my support. That said, I found it because it was free and once I played it, I supported you for it. Knowing it's monthly releases has made me commit twice what I would normally, recognizing this is a great deal of work and a AAA result.

Anonymous

Hi Khaz, Game dev will proceed in its usual pace. The only difference is the release frequency. So in bimonthly, the patrons will get 2 months worth of content. Although it is still not set in stone at the mo. As usual, Arioch will post updates on a regular basis and we'll let the patrons know once we've come with the decision to shift to bImonthly.. Thanks for all the support! It really means alot for us. :)
