Gregory "Joey" Johnson was arrested in 1984 for burning a flag during a protest at the Republican National Convention. His case went to the U.S. Supreme Court where the 5-to-4 ruling meant that such acts of protest were protected by the First Amendment as symbolic Free Speech.

Mr. Johnson would later join a chorus of protesters on the steps of the U.S. Capitol where he would be arrested again, and another 5-to-4 Supreme Court decision, U.S. v. Eichman, in 1990, held that flag burning is protected “free speech” that could not be banned by the United States.

Now, Gregory “Joey” Johnson has announced a July 4th, 2019 protest at an undisclosed location in Washington, D.C., in a four-minute video released on YouTube and tagged with #JULY4BURNFLAG.
