Hello, Wolfenstahl here!

We already discussed this matter with some of you over on Deathblight Discord.

But we figured we should ask all of our Patrons from the 5 $ tier upwards, via this vote, how they feel on the matter.

Please feel free to comment below or to discuss things with us over on Deathblight Discord.

The vote will be running for 7 days.

We didn't decide on anything yet, we mainly want to hear your opinion before we make a decision.

Some of you may ask, why do we hold this vote?

The answer to this question is:

With the recent team expansion and Steam opening up to adult games, we really want to push forwards. The webcomic so far takes up 8-9 days out of 21 workdays of Crescentia per month.

This is almost half of Cres' worktime.

The main reason the webcomic is eating up so much time is because every page has to be drawn from scratch. There are no graphics to be re-used, which is higly inefficient.

In a visual novel the character portraits would be drawn once and used for all conversations.

CGs would be used to illustrate important scenes, action scenes, or to depict hentai scenes.

But the overall graphical workload would be much reduced.

This naturally means that a Visual Novel/ Kinetic Novel will not depict a hentai scene from 5 different angles.

The webcomic does this as every page is drawn from scratch, but it's precisely what takes up a huge amount of time that could be spend elsewhere.

Assuming we would stop the webcomic after the current chapter is done, and we would continue the Deathblight story as Visual Novel instead, what would be the benefits?

We would be able to considerably increase the working speed on all our projects.

Here is the current breakdown of Cres monthly schedule:

8-9 days per month: Webcomic

2 days per month: Patreon speedpaints

3-4 days per month: Deathblight RPG graphics

3-4 days per month: Side Project

3 days per month: Commissions

If we would "free up" those 8-9 workdays that are currently invested in the webcomic, we could distribute them to other sources.

Since we only invest as much of our time into Deathblight RPG as Patreon supporters pays us to, this will only have a minor impact on DB RPG itself.

(resulting in perhaps 1 or 2 additional workdays for DB RPG)

But our side projects will greatly benefit from this change.

Currently we are working on a proper remake of our old game LDH (Last Demon Hunter).

The game will be in full quality with cel-shading CGs and multiple upgrades to the old game.

(new content, new enemies, overall more of everything)

The project is 100% self funded with our private savings, but don't worry, according to the rewards listed on our Patreon, we will hand it out to 10 $ Patrons upwards once it's done.

Currently Cres can only dedicate about 4 days per month to this project.

But if we stop work on the webcomic and continue it as Visual Novel instead, Cres could work roughly 11-12 days on the side project and effectively finish it in 1/3 of the time frame.

(we are talking about 2-3 months versus 6-9 months, which is a huge difference)

After this side project is done, we could potentially get to working on the Deathblight Visual Novel, which could be finished in a timely manner as well.

Potentially this could lead to the LDH remake and a Deathblight VN both being completed and shipped out in 2019.

(no promises though! delays always happen when you least expect them)

Works on Deathblight RPG continue as usual and are not delayed by this.

Frankly spoken, if we continue the webcomic as it currently is, we will be needing at least 6+ years to tell the story that is already planned.

Also it will slow down all our projects as dedicating 8-9 workdays per month to the webcomic alone is a lot.

If we did a Visual Novel instead, we could tell the story that is already planned in less than 5 years, we could include much more lore and dialogues in the Visual Novel and flesh it all out properly.

As well as getting a couple side projects done while we are at it.

(at any rate, we would get much more done in the same time frame or less)

These are the rough numbers on the matter.

Personally, I haven't decided on what to do yet, and I wanted everyones input on this matter as it's a rather big change to our schedules and works we did the past 4+ years.

I don't want to jump to conclusions and rather hear everyone out before deciding on something.

The webcomic is good for having something people can return to twice a week.

And it tells the story of our characters in a lively way.

However, I sometimes feel like it's fairly inefficient and we could make much more progress on the story of the webcomic, as well as our other projects, if we simply turned the webcomic into a proper high quality Visual Novel.

Other than that, with speeding up our side projects we can produce so much more content for you guys, as well as selling those side projects on Steam etc. which will benefit our team in the long run.

Please let me know what you all think!

I really want to hear your opinion on this before I make a decision.

Thank you very much and stay awesome! ^^

I'll vote for anything that means more games.

Will Art and content still be posted on sites like HF if this change took place? If the comic is no longer a public weekly upload but rather a visual novel will it effect your ability to draw more followers? I support the idea myself having been a big fan of all your work for a few years now.

I've been thinking about it since the topic was brought up on Discord yesterday, and I find myself deciding on the VN/KN style. While I do agree with the concerns that the main story might lose a little something, I think the benefits outweigh it. Freeing up all the time spent on the comic to be able to devote it to other projects make it sounds like you'll gain a lot more in exchange.

Something that people should keep in mind when thinking about the topic is the strength's of the webcomic format that switching over to VN would miss out on. Characterization of the characters through unique expressions and demeanor/mannerisms would be something we'd lose out on with the VN format, since there would be a set number of dialogue graphics that would be interchangeable. Dynamic poses and angles during fight/sex scenes would be greatly diminished as well. Each respective scene would be a few CG images per, instead of the detailed/longer sequences we see in the current webcomic format. I worry this format wouldn't do the scenes justice, or give us as good of a look at the girls abilities and powers, since we wouldn't get as much of a look at them. Also keep in mind that this would mean long stretches between the story segments. We'd be waiting to have the story come all at once in larger bursts.

Oh MAN is this a tough one. I LOVE webcomics, and Deathblight has been one of my favorites - and not just for the hentai. I'd be really sad to lose out on the detail and artistry of the webcomic… but on the other hand, having more Deathblight coming out faster (or at least in bigger chunks) and more of the other stuff is hard to turn down. I think, ultimately, I'd prefer if you guys stuck to the webcomic. While the idea of more Deathblight story and lore is tempting, the Deathblight RPG already offers quite a bit of what a VN does, and switching to VN means losing out on what the webcomic offers.

Tokamara

I'm with Jason Bill and William Robert on this one. A VN would kill expressions, poses, and the dynamics of the fights and powers that pulled me into the webcomic in the first place. It's very rare to find something that balances story and eroticism, and still keep it fun to read and watch develop. I'd rather not see a series that pulled this off swap to a "talking heads" system that comes out every few months. Maybe instead of two pages a week, drop to one? We've all had patience for great artwork over the last few years, and it's understandable that the workload's hard to balance; but this way, you could cut down the comic time by half, and still have content for it while being able to speed up other projects.

Kaede Kagami

I still think that cloning Cres could solve the problem, but since it's not an option, I don't know what to say

Argenten

VN seems like a bad move to me, I initially got interested in this group because of the nuanced art, story telling, and vibrancy of the characters. I've loved the little touches and moments of silliness, sincerity and just plain fun that Cres' art style has added to the comic and we'd lose all of that arguably for the sake of giving more time to side projects that feel like a departure from what initially got this group such support in the first place. The comic might take awhile but that's because the detail and overall quality make it worthwhile to me I mean, the idea of a remake of LDH sounds cool, but I would sacrifice the comic and it's flexibility of expression and display for it nor any other side projects. They've been nice and all, but i definitely feel like cutting the comic for the sake of small side projects would be fixing what isn't broken on several levels. The side projects don't get a lot of time to begin with because they are *side projects* little things that don't need a lot of time because they aren't the main focus as compared to the comic or the big RPG. By cutting the comic in this way, it's turning the comic, the starter for all this, into another side project at worst or just another game at best for the sake of finishing a bunch of small things faster, not even adding that much time to the big RPG. It smacks of cutting corners for the sake of finishing things faster. These are my opinions of course and should be taken with a grain of salt, but for my part, I like how things have been and don't see any reason to change them.

For normal dialogue, VN saves time on drawing standing shot-reverse-shot, with things like action and stilly chibi expressions still being present as CGs. I'm for VN I don't think anybody wants to cut the stuff that is done well in the webcomic from a potential VN. It's just a more economical approach, so the content that uses assets that repeat can reuse them and each dialogue doesn't need drawing the characters once again. That way, the good stuff - cool scenes, silly scenes, Quinn @v@ , etc can get more focus.

Anonymous

I on the other hand think that expressions could be more personalized for each character, as only few could be done to perfection to completely match the character's personality, whereas now it's hard for Cres to make a character always "smile in a certain way" characteristic for them. Silly faces one-off faces, chibis and expressions just for one situation can be done in CGs too.

Anonymous

I like the idea of the VN headshots could be made with different faces like I have seen in others.

Anonymous

I believe streamlining the Deathblight comic as a VN/KN will seem like a great idea in the short term, but as Cres and everyone start to really go forward you will start to not like it and fell like you cannot go back because you dedicated pages/chapters/arcs to that format. If Deathblight wasn't so established, I would say go for it. I feel you would consider it a mistake down the road because you will be watering down a lot of elements. Your backgrounds will become very cookie cutter, you are going to reduce the amount of secondary, tritary, or background characters because you will still need to devote a large amount of time just creating a bunch of sprites for their equivalent of two pages and then we will not see them for months, you quite a few unique situations your characters end up in so you may feel that you need to sacrifice it to ensure you release on time. VN/KN are a quick solution not a very flexible solution.

Anonymous

I agree with balto you have already dedicated alot of resources to the comic and while changing the format midway may sound nice in the short term you will lose value in some elements in the VN/KN format.

Anonymous

Personally, my interest does not extend much beyond the web comic. If that ceased to exist, I doubt I would stick around. I really do not enjoy visual novels and that style of storytelling. This does not mean I think they are bad or lower quality, it's just my personal preference. I think you should go ahead with whatever you think is the best way to tell your story. Whatever is decided, I have really enjoyed the work that all of you have put in to this project.

deathblight

artworks and art samples from the games still will be posted on sites like HF, don't worry^^ The webcomic sadly isn't drawing in much more people anymore really over the last couple of months, so while a VN/KN might not be updated as frequently it is far more likely to gain us more followers via steam releases.

deathblight

Well, you need to see the whole picture: We only did the webcomic "back then" because I just recovered from carpal tunnel. But as I was able to draw more, we got back into game developement. We were stuck at roughly 600 to 1000 $ until we got DB RPG running, which helped us climb to roughly 4000. The webcomic did help us to start, but ultimately it's boging us down. The problem with the webcomic is that it's preventing me from creating artworks for games faster. (so there is something "broken" and something needs fixing, we cannot continue as it is right now, I'm not saying to drop the webcomic, but we need some sort of solution and it's not an easy one) But games and selling them on Steam is where the real money is at. Our so called "side projects" are not small games at all, they are not as huge in scope as DB RPG, but they are still decently sized games (Dark Alley Elf is an exception). Side projects are not side projects because they are small, but rather because they are not Patreon funded. (Our main project on Patreon is DB RPG) Also, if we don't change something, we will run out of money sooner or later due to paying our teammembers for full time work. We actually lose 3000 USD each month currently. This money is taken from our private funds and savings. And we cannot finish a game without my artwork so we are kinda in a problematic spot, as we cannot sell unfinished games on Steam. If the webcomic was drawing in new people this would not be a problem, but since it's not drawing in new people this is tough. Wolf is currently looking into other solutions to the matter as he doesn't want to give up the webcomic as well, but it's really not easy, he tried a couple things already (like hiring other artists) but so far it didn't work out.

deathblight

actually no, creating new characters is easier for a visual novel than for a webcomic. we already have experience with the format so we know this for a fact. showing multiple characters in the webcomic is more work and it's tougher than having that in a VN. We could go much deeper into the characters and their personalities in VN format. Fun fact: Deathblight was originally planned to be a VN. We had to cut A LOT of content because we couldn't fit them into the pages and Wolf is constantly very frustrated about this. That being said, VNs aren't a quick solution but rather a long term one. Sure there are some shitty VNs on Steam but if we create a VN we plan to create an actually good one.

deathblight

thank you very much^^ we haven't decided on anything yet and since it's such a tough call, we do want to think this reeeeally well through before doing anything.

Yetila

Like a lot of people have already said, the web comic was the initial project that brought Deathblight to my attention but as the development shifted more to the gaming side i found myself way more invested in the universe. I enjoy the comic for the variety it brings especially when it comes to the h-scenes but gonna be honest, if it would mean more side projects like dark elf alley being created I'd say make the comic into a VN and dedicate that extra time to bringing in game projects which may consequently bring in more patreons too which should help out with the siginificant costs you're currently experiencing not to mention the sales Steam will bring in. I think you're already seeing the divide that this decision will make but i do agree that if making and releasing games is what is going to help sustain your bussiness you should focus on that since if you have to close down the whole team because of lack of funds there will be no web comic or games anyway.

I love the webcomic and it is what first brought me here but a visual novels sounds interesting, I'm curious how it will turn out. If I'm understanding correctly, the visual novel would continue the story the web comic is telling? And is the VN going to start from the beginning of the Webcomic? If that's the case, then I am all for the Visual Novel. I also like the VN idea because it sounds as though it could feed the bottomless pit that is my media consumption. Mentioning the main things I enjoy that are made here are the Webcomic and the game (Especially DB RPG) so this change seem to be mostly positive in my book. I've not played (read?) any visual novels but I trust in you guys ability to make something really enjoyable. Best of luck I the future, I guess. One last thing, I would love to read the story of Deathblight and All of the lore in that world. I am invested in the story, and when I'm invested I consume everything that relates to it. I keep having to edit this because I forgot to add something, but I also find the VN compelling because the story will be given in nice chunks or something maybe, and that will make the story flow better, and not give me the feeling that I need to reread the webcomic to remember the plot in my mind. If I add more to this I'm just going to make them all replies to this. That will be Fun!!

Harry Fox

tbh i was in it for the games

Here is my two cents; I am more of a recent supporter, and the only reason I found you all is because of Dark Elf release. I took a look at the webcomics, and honestly, I am not too interested. I would like more games, and more support to DB RPG - and I love the idea of VNs. Personally, I think the CG quality will be much better than that of webcomics just because it will not be stuffed into small frames. Bottom line is, what will make you more money? If you think you can make more money by making more games and publish it on steam. Go for it. Sure, you will lose some supporters at first, and that is a hit that you must be willing to take if it means growth in the long run. I do hope that will continue to be around because I do believe the quality of the art is top notch.

After the end of this current chapter, you could sell the currently completed comic as a full physical graphic novel. That's what "I Roved Out in Search of Truth & Love" did. If you released that at the same time as the completed DB RPG, I think that would be a great way to see where a lot of your financial backing lies, either in the games or the comic. This would also bring in a lot of extra cash, so that you would be able to continue supporting yourselves. You would just have to be careful of how much of the story you put into the novel so that new readers could enjoy it without feeling they've missed something or that the story ended in an awkward position. Good luck, it's not an easy decision either way.

deathblight

the VN/KN would start again from the beginning of the webcomic's story (so it is complete and noone has to go and read the comic first) but then will also go beyond what we currently have and continue the story. Also the whole story would be in greater detail since the first chapters were rather short and we weren't able to put in as much info as we wanted to.

deathblight

Deathblight RPG will still be in developments for 2+ years or so, since we want to add a lot of content to the game. And we didn't had plans on making physical prints of the webcomic since that would also be yet another investment. Still thanks for your suggestion^^

Anonymous

A VN would reduce the graphical workload by cutting down on art, but to be frank, the art is why I'm here. What you would be achieving is precisely what I don't want.

Anonymous

Just as much effort would be dedicated to art, it would just be delivered through a different medium and in higher quality, while reusing assets such as portraits for more story, in a way that suits Team Wolfenstahl's current resources better.

Anonymous

I, personally, much prefer a webcomic over a VN. You certainly gain more unique status being a webcomic than a visual novel, as those are pretty over saturated at this point. That said, you are right in that they are way cheaper and easier to do. However, you lose a lot of things. Characters are going to be inherently less expressive, scenes less imagined, and I think more pressing, is... the story is going to have to fall onto the writing far more than the visuals with a VN format. Unless you want to just go crazy with CG images, poses, and expressions -- which at that point you may as well just be doing a web comic, you have to rely on the writing more. Writing dialogue is generally easy, because you just write what the characters are saying. In a VN, since the visuals don't tell the tale completely, you have to use descriptors, describe things -- how characters are interacting with each other, moving about the scene and so on. We've yet to see that kind of "book" writing from you. If you choose to not describe things, you lose a lot of character interaction, uniqueness and everything else, but if you write descriptions poorly, it can detract from the experience in a big way. I think that would be my main concern.

Mao Tsclusul

frankly speaking i'm here for the db rpg, although without the comic there would be no game at all. i would rather you to focus on your comic and dbrpg only in terms of projects while keeping your speedpaint/commission schedule. splitting your resources slows down the overall progress in my opinion.

Mao Tsclusul

i have to agree with trigger. vn's rely heavily on how well you can create a world with just words ... that is not an easy feat. If for example sierra lee would be your scriptor you could pull this off - but you don't. so focus on the traits you are already "gifted" with.

deathblight

the problem isn't that we are splitting resources. if we only do the webcomic and Deathblight RPG (which are both free and are not being sold) we will need to fire most of our team in about 6-12 months if nothing changes for the better. So we do need those side projects that we can sell. Patreon alone cannot sustain us. And we are losing a lot of money every month. Not doing side project wouldn't mean we can put this time into DB RPG as 4000$ cannot pay the bills of even 3 people and our team is twice that size. So we need to do something to get a push upwards and hopefully more fans/supporters. Also we cannot rely on Patreon alone, that would be unwise in itself, since what would happen if Patreon some day suddenly closes down? From one day to another we wouldn't have a source of funds and thus cannot create anything anymore, so we need multiple income sources. Basically what we do is making sure that Deathblight can continue no matter what happens^^
