Hey there, I've been pondering some ideas for the Patreon and thought I'd poll you guys on it.  I see early access a lot on other Patreons and was wondering if I should implement it on mine.  I haven't thought about it too much, but it applies to a couple areas of my work and I have a couple thoughts and questions on it.

1. I never really liked the feeling of withholding my core content to people, that being my animations.  That's why they're always free and I release them as soon as I'm done.  That also helps me grow, get my work out there better, and obtain more feedback than others who don't.

2. I wonder if going early access on some content (whether that be some animations, all animations, or something else) would stunt my growth at all.  In theory I would only have them restricted for a week or two, so if I kept a consistent schedule I'd technically be releasing them at the same rate.

3. I'd expect a hit in public opinion if I went through with it, but I'm wondering what my patrons would think as well.  How often do people drop in/out, what tiers would early access make sense for, do the tiers need to be reworked, etc.

4. If I went early access I would likely increase my work load as well.  I've been trying to spend most of my free time on my projects for the past month to see what I'm capable of, and it seems to be working out well enough so far (though I still wish I had more time).  I'd feel a bit guilty if I started clamming up with all these Patreon rewards and I didn't have anything to show for it content-wise.

5. I've always struggled with money, which I'm sure is no surprise to many of you who have stuck around.  There have been a few surprises which have put me to my knees.  It would be nice to have some breathing room for a change, that doesn't come in the form of scrambling for commissions or begging for hours.

Those are some of my thoughts, I'd be happy to hear what you guys think and I'll throw in some poll options to get a feel for the crowd.  Thanks for reading.

This one is a tough cookie... First thing first... The most important thing is that you must be comfortable with the workload. If going for this ends up inflicting with your quality standard, and make you stress more to get things on time. Then I think it’s a BAD IDEA. Second…. If you try this you will most likely get more Patreons and of course more on your channel. That’s always nice. More income and more to invest in equipment and extra to spare. Then I think it’s a GOOD IDEA. Third… I went for Complicated because of what I wrote over, and it’s your channel. You decide the pace you want to work in. The only suggestion I have is that some times it can be too many projects going on. If you were to try this out you probably need more Pin-Ups to fill some downtime in your work.

When you work in DAZ, Blender and similar programs it takes a lot of time to do poses and animations, and make them look good. All this takes up so many hours and for one person it can be overwhelming. We all want more to see, but we have been spoiled with the quality of these programs. Before you go for the final POLL-verdict, please make it trail for yourself. We don't want you to get burned out by this.

I think going for a time limited release for non-patrons could possibly attract more people who don't want to wait for it to come out for them, on the other hand it could annoy people and have them questioning why you don't just release it for everyone at the same time, it's not a straight forward thing. Personally I'd say go with whatever helps you and your workflow and doesn't cause any issues for yourself, you also have a twitter so try a public poll on there to see what the public think of this, one of the best ways of finding out really.

Patreon is sales. Your core content is what you're selling. If you don't have some kind of incentive for people to support you, centered around your core content - what is their motivation to support you? Most successful Patreons don't release their content for free at all, and that is the proper model. You're on here to generate income for yourself from the content you create - you're sabotaging that initiative by releasing what people should be paying you for, for free. The notion of it stunting your growth isn't really relevant - because the only sort of growth that really matters is the sort of growth that allows you to spend more time on your art. Distributing that content for free is what is inhibiting your growth, nothing else. I think timed exclusivity is a great start, but really there should be teaser animations being released for free, and then full animations only available to Patrons. There are worse artists, creating worse content, that are getting more support than you because their Patreon is set up to better enable them.

Hey Nyl! Please read what Hushsucks wrote above. After reading my own text, I must admit he's really more on the core problem you may have when it comes to sales. If you want new Patreons to pledge I think this may be the best way to start. If it's easier to get your content other places, and for free, I also think you will have a tougher times ahead.
