Half-Life: Alyx Is NOT An Absolute Nightmare – This Is Why

The first 1000 people to use this link will get a 2 month free trial of Skillshare Premium Membership: https://skl.sh/upisnotjump I return to review VR games again, and what better virtual reality game to review than Valve’s Half Life: Alyx. No major story spoilers but I talk about Half Life: Alyx’s gameplay at length. Virtual Reality finally has a game I think most can agree is a great game that has been made excellent in VR. I may not be a Half Life fan as such, but I have played Half Life 1 and 2, and Half Life: Alyx has made me fall in love with the series. Half Life Alyx is without a doubt the best virtual reality game I have ever played, I compare it a lot to Boneworks and The Walking Dead: Saint and Sinners because I think it highlights where those games missed the mark a little, and what future games need to try and do to make VR really take off as a platform. I played Half Life: Alyx on the Index, but it seems to play just as well on the Vive. I would recommend the Index version as the Index has the best virtual Reality controllers I have used so far. Anyway, that’s enough of me talking about VR, go get Half Life: Alyx if you can!

Great video, really makes me want to play it. But alas, I am one of the many plebs yet to get a VR headset.

1. Baby Matt is adorable 2. Don't strangle Emma 3. Great job! FWIW, I think reusing props was great, and that could save you money in future videos Thanks for a great video, and stay safe!

Really loved the video. The problem with making games is that it takes money and people cost you budget. To make a VR game requires the studio to take a proportion of their engineering, tool and tech art teams to set the game to engine run in the VR environment. This really should be done in preproduction but some studios don’t have the luxury of having enough time to devote to this stage and it over laps with the production stage. Valve have everything they need and it shows what you can achieve. The initial implementation of setting up a VR project is going to be expensive but when a studios has done it once it should become less expensive and in theory affordable.

This video was excellent. I think you got the pacing down really well.

I got to test HL:Alyx on a friend's setup (I own one too, just not the game itself) and I constantly had trouble with the controls. I kept throwing loot over my shoulder, switching to the wrong weapons, and having trouble using the healing items. The problem with putting things into your shoulder inventory is that you can't see whether it went in there or just dropped behind your back, instead you just have to listen to some sound... I personally really prefer the inventory being on the hip. I don't think that HL:Alyx is the perfect VR game that people say it is, but it is a damn amazing game.
