Yeah, unfortunately sexual harassment is quite normalized in manga culture and Oda takes it a bit far at times. Absalom is probably the worst character in the entire series. Which is weird considering how progressive Oda is in other areas

Oda (The author of One Piece) stated that if Strawhats were a family these would be their "roles": Father: Franky Mother: Robin Sons: Zoro, Sanji, Usopp, Luffy and Chopper Daughter: Nami

If you’re not aware, Go Nagi is really the person that enforced fan-service and sexual harassment in anime and manga. How ever his argument was that it’s supposed to depict adolescent sexuality and development. In other kids being curious about adults, peeking on girls, etc. How ever certain authors take it a bit far and incorporate older aged characters harassing younger in the case of one piece and there is this weird infatuation with old guys perving on young kids for whatever reason that has kind of been a typical trend in a lot of Japanese media.

That's interesting, didn't know that. Nowadays it mostly seems to manifest in the "lovable pervert" trope though a la Master Roshi, Jiraya or Melidoas which is fairly problematic

There are a ton of "problematic" tropes throughout anime if you look at things though the lens of real life. Example: A troupe many female characters have in anime Nami being one of em, which is "Male characters says something annoying or dumb that the female character doesn't like, she then beats the shit out of the male character till they're bruised and bloody...end of joke. Equally problematic behavior and messaging IF looked at as if its supposed to be taken seriously.

aoblock

did you really say "nowadays" and then name 3 characters written more than 10 years ago ? master Roshi is almost 40 years old at this point

6:04 "stop teasing me and put it in!" jack ayoo???

It makes me uncomfortable too, although even Absalom is pretty tame when compared to some weird ass stuff in other popular manga/anime (looks at SAO). I'm certainly not a fan of it though. Absalom would have 100% been a better character without the whole creepy pervert and harassment aspect, luckily Oda doesn't make a habit of this.

@parks I get why some may dislike it, but the whole "women beating men up" trope isn't that big of a deal for me, and I actually find it very funny in OP. Whenever this trope is done, the men in later scenes are shown to be completely uninjured which indicates that they were never actually hurt. It's quite literally just a comedic visualization of disapproval with no lasting implications, I don't think it's meant to be taken in a serious way at all especially since all parties involved are close friends. Also, women beating up men is not some widespread issue in modern society, it's almost always the reverse due to the physical power difference. Women being assaulted (like Nami by Absalom) is very much a widespread issue, and even more importantly the sexual aspect of it especially makes it extremely uncomfortable.

Tyro533

the difference is that one thing happens a lot more IRL than the other. And that Japan has a big issue with the one thing happening IRL but not the other.

Smiling Saiyan

He does indeeed have an amazing design ^_^

Jay

With your own logic murder and physical assault is normalized as well since its shown all the time. Kid get your head out of the gutter and stop letting random anime youtubers create your opinions for you.

Tyro533

Murder and violence are generally considered bad whereas for sexual harrassment there are a quite a few people that go like "Ah it's just boys playing around" or "she was asking for it"

Krolliox

Absalom is just Sanji without the chivalry, both pervs.

Jacob D Tired

I love all the Scooby Doo moments in Thriller Bark

DiamonDust

@john name one time a woman getting sexually assaulted made an anime better 😅

Saidi Mohamed

lol no, Sanji doesn't sexually assaults women, or want to forcefully marry them

Eric Miller

You realize he's a villain right? The reading comprehension of this fanbase is in the gutter. This is next level gymnastics.
