Ahhh! Great to see another SJA reaction! I knew you'd enjoy this one. This is a really fun and good story as it delves quite deeply into the topics of war, grooming children to violence and also the case of children going missing. I really like how they tie this in with Luke still struggling to adapt to social norms with the joke he tells Maria and also the situation of him accidentally humiliating Lance. It's an good vessel that pushes him to learn more about the way the world works, society and in this case, gaming with the laser tag facility. I also like that Clyde acts as his guide and mentor for the situation in introducing him to the concept of games and trying to show him the difference between that and the reality of war. They have a really good rapport at this point. Likewise with Sarah Jane and Maria. I love the scenes where they build the weather machine together and infiltrate the Combat 3000 office as well as over-smarting Grantham. Maria is right about Grantham being worse than Kudlak due to the fact that he was happy to willingly abduct children through an alien source just for the money benefits. His scene in the office when told Sarah Jane and Maria that it was a relief in getting rid of the children ("conscious is like a stone in your shoe") was chillingly horrific but a really effective scene. I wish we had seen him get his comeuppance. And yeah this story is a bit unique in having an alien that's not inherently evil for the first time in the show which is really refreshing. While Kudlak isn't innocent as he already stated, he was ultimately lead astray by his computer Mistress and mostly strives for finding peace. I actually really liked that twist with Luke discovering the hidden message and Kudlak genuinely feeling regret and horror in what he did to the point where he felt like he deserved death himself. But it's nice that Sarah Jane rejects that notion which leads to him coming to the resolve of wanting to bring back the surviving children that he sent off world which brings a bit more optimism and hope for his path forward. But it's tragic to think just how many lost children were sent out for the past decade. There's a nice subtle moment in that scene where Sarah Jane and the kids leave but Sarah Jane looks back at Kudlak briefly once more and he just looks deeply in regret with those wincing noises he makes as he's still coming to terms with the mess that he's made. My favourite scenes in this story are the ones where Sarah Jane and Maria confront the Mistress and have a heated debate over war being a place for children and how humans have a drive for battle. Even the Mistress responding to Clyde's response by saying "play is a preparation for life" is quite thought provoking too. I even liked the scene where the Mistress talked about humans being one of the most aggressive species as that gave a slight foreshadowing to Kudlak's true nature in dropping his militant front when alone with her. I also liked the inclusion of Jen and how she one upped Clyde in showing that she could look after herself. Clyde's reaction to that was funny. They had a good small rapport there but I like how she gave Luke the kiss as an appreciation for him saving the day. There was also a brief by nice small moment with Lance mentioning his father being a solider and Jen subtly comforting him. I kinda wish that he and Luke had a bit of a moment at the end too just to wrap up the misunderstanding from earlier at school but I like to think they did that offscreen. I also like the moments where they see the Earth from the window of the spaceship. Overall, a fun story and the concept of training kids for combat in a laser quest facility makes for a bit of an engaging narrative. As a kid, when I watched this story, I got excited over the laser quest and space aspects of it whereas watching this again as an adult now (and even as a teen back then), I enjoy noticing the serious layers embedded within the story mainly with the scary aspect of children being kidnapped and exploited. They also did a good job with Kudlak's buglike appearance which looks and feels authentic with the bug eyed movements and twitching. Glad you enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to your reaction to the next one as it's my personal favourite.

Finally caught this one.. and I think JY nailed everything in their above comment, haha. Definitely a story with lots of commentary on politics, especially some more mature ones for a show aimed at young kids (dealing with the grief of your child going missing, kids being trained for war, leaders refusing to stand down (or in this case, an advanced evil AI) because war is all they know, and even a conclusion where the villain is actually a pretty chill dude, just completely blinded by his leaders and 'purpose' as a warrior. I think Russell T Davies has always been great at integrating those more complex moralities and themes into his shows, so Sarah Jane Adventures is of no exception...! The chemistry between the cast is especially pretty fun here, with them being paired off with each other. Clyde and Luke work great, with Clyde's 'too cool for school' attitude and Luke's 'born yesterday' perspective leading to some pretty fun conversations. Maria doesn't get much to do here beyond follow Sarah Jane around, but there's some fun scenes between the two - especially that wacky rain-generating horn contraptation that feels especially unique in being sci-fi, and I love the idea of Sarah being a little bit of an inventor in her free time with the alien artefacts she's collected in her attic. Another really enjoyable reaction overall, thanks for checking this one out! And to echo JY, excited for the next one...!
