JY

Great to see another Sarah Jane reaction! I was looking forward to this. Glad you enjoyed it. :D This is one of my favourite episodes of Series 1 mainly because it really delves in the serious matters such as divorce, broken family matters and even Alzheimer's in a really effective way. The personal drama with the Jackson family really shines here as they're all going through a separation and struggling to find a way to communicate through this matter. There were some really strong messages with the showcasing of Maria and her family's issues. She's old enough to understand the divorce but she still wants her family back to how it was before. The internal struggle that she has in this story is really well written in a way it can also be relatable. All those suppressed feelings that Maria kept inside only to end up coming out was so unexpected and I really like that. I especially like the moments where both Maria and Alan individually snap at Chrissie whenever they're both alone with her in a scene and tell her some home truths which she rightfully deserved to hear. And in the midst of all this, Maria deals with all this while fighting aliens which can be a nice temporary escapism until it ends up affecting her personal life when Alan turns to stone which makes for a very effective cliffhanger. I really like Sarah Jane's relationship with Maria too. The way she could instantly tell that Maria was going through a rough time after slamming the door shut and her gently comforting her was really nice. Even when Maria lashes out at Sarah Jane when her father's life is at stake, Sarah Jane knows that she doesn't truly mean what she's saying even though you could feel her heart-breaking in that moment. Chrissie is without a doubt a horrible mother. But the way she is critical about Sarah Jane and her relationship with Maria is quite realistic and helps keep the show grounded by having an outside source be wary and critical of what goes on behind closed doors (which is what Kelsey originally did in the pilot too). But I think the scene with her talking to Alan's statue was more of a way of showing her thought process and that she's aware of her flaws. But it definitely didn't make me feel sorry for her. I still think she's awful lol. I didn't think it was intended for making her sympathetic but more-so in showing that she's aware that she's problematic and probably can't vocalise these thoughts towards her family. But because of Maria's strained relationship with her mother, Sarah Jane ends up providing a motherly presence with the kids mainly with Maria and both are able to fill a void in each other's lives which I find comforting. Clyde and Luke also work well together in this story. I like how Clyde was protective of Luke, guiding him through signals of what to do and what not to do. Even his attempt to save Luke during the car incident was admirable too. The heart of the story is definitely with Bea though. Her story was rather bittersweet with the message of no one listening to you when you're old. I love the scenes she has with Sarah Jane and Maria. Particularly the parallels made with Sarah Jane and Bea both being perceived as crazy because of the things they've seen throughout their past adventures, I really like that Sarah Jane could listen and connect with her because of this. It's even fascinating to learn that she met the Sontarans just like Sarah Jane did in Classic Who (which answers your question). It's another thing that they can connect with for a brief moment. In addition to this, I think the issue of Alzheimer's was also handled delicately in this story with Bea. Particularly when she couldn't give Luke all the answers at the start and especially with Maria in the second part. It's especially sad when Maria struggles and desperately tries to get through to Bea when her mind is trapped in the past and with Alan's life on the line, it made those scenes have even more urgency. Even Maria parallels with Sarah Jane and Bea while also realising that not every adventure is fun. I also think it's great that they didn't magically cure her at the end as that would have given the wrong message. I think the twist with the talisman allowing her to hear Edgar (her husband's) voice one last time was really touching. Really great acting from Law, Elisabeth and Yasmin in those moments. The Gorgon and Nuns were also effective in being slightly creepy. There was a good unsettling atmosphere with them situated in the church and old home settings too. I liked the bit of Greek Mythology here too. There's a good sense of tenseness and bordering on dystopian mood/tone. My only issue or nitpick is that I wish we saw Sarah Jane, Clyde and Luke attempt to physically fight the nuns, even if the Nuns were too strong for them. I wish there was at least an attempt to throw hands in part 2. Although to be fair, Clyde did try in part 1 when they took Luke but he got caught off-guard. I think seeing something similar to what Amy and Rory did in Amy's Choice when they had to fight the old people would have been cool or even funny if you can still remember that episode. Rory: I can't hit her Amy: WHACK HER! I also laughed when you made the Chrissie and Medusa/Gorgon comparison. That's surprisingly an accurate description of her! Also when you mentioned the teacher from the Magic School Bus, that took me back. Another childhood show that I remember watching back in the day. Glad you appreciated part 1 and the resolution to part 2. Looking forward to your reactions to the next Sarah Jane episodes.

I think JY covered every point possible with this episode above, haha! It's definitely the strongest story so far.. by no means anything special, of course, but it deals with some pretty mature themes in a respectful way -- I'm glad they didn't have the talisman cure the Alzheimers at the end, as that would obviously be deeply cheap. Attack of the evil nuns! The villains are pretty generic, but it's fun to see another alien spin on some mythological creatures. Luke is very niave here, but then again he *was* born only a few weeks ago. He has all that knowledge, but due to his lack of experience/lessons in life, he's the kinda person who'd jump into a stranger's car at request, as shown in this story; lmao! Bea and her husband encountering aliens is a fun bit of world building, and the Sontaran namedrop is a nice connector between Sarah and her; as mentioned above, she encountered them in the classic series in one of her first stories. I'm glad Maria's parents have some level of self awareness (specifically Chrissie), but I suppose it's also good that she doesn't suddenly change character upon acknowledging some of her flaws... I feel a lesser show would try and speedrun a character arc with her suddenly becoming a better person. Nope, Chrissie still sucks! And yeah, her wariness over Sarah is perfectly valid, and Alan doesn't seem too concerned with her constant visits, but he seems to be fairly familiar/trusting of Sarah by now. Still though, Maria is so young! At least call to check up on her, Alan! Great reaction, looking forward to the next story!
