Another thing I just realized about the Walt/Jane situation is actions have consequences. Walt didn’t know the side of Jane that Jesse knew. The kind, loving side. His only impression of her was the nasty, blackmailing, addict side. If she had been nicer to him he would’ve tried to save her. All he saw her was a greedy, manipulative addict that was a bad influence on his partner. You get what you give. Actions have consequences.

I feel like a lot of people who watch this forget that jane even had a different side to her.

It’s been a minute since I’ve commented but this topic is too interesting! I think it' clear that this show likes to reside in the gray area, a lot of characters are flawed while having likeable traits about them or reasonable morals. But Jane’s death is something truly heinous when it comes to regular human life, I find it interesting that you reference a superhero film to sort of understand Walt’s decision but then use your own personal life to empathize with Jesse. I personally think that Walt directly played a part in her death by doing nothing- those were the two choices at hand, move Jane back to her side or allow her to continue choking. Yes she could have ended up in that predicament later on or even before meeting Jesse but in that moment it could have been stopped by him and that’s what matters, he knew by stepping aside he would be ending her life; that’s why he cried after- what happened to her was not his choice to make, it was a selfish decision. Before Jane a lot of the deaths Walter has been involved in were forced upon him due to the person being a physical threat to numerous characters, but all Jane had was potentially exposing him for crimes he willingly committed. She wasn’t perfect but she certainly wasn’t on the level Tuco or Crazy 8 were on, and even worse by allowing her to die it didn’t really resolve anything. In the end Skylar still caught on to his lies. The only thing it did was leave Jesse in a worse state than before while playing into Walter’s hand, and lead to more tragedy due to Jane’s father not being stable while working. This is no longer a man doing things for the sake of his loved ones, this is a man doing things for the sake of his business and ego. This death was so unnecessary and avoidable, but his pride couldn’t do it. She outsmarted him, took his partner, and with one call she could have sent him to a cell.

You said it yourself. She took his partner and could have sent him to a cell. That is why he made the decision he made. Whether it was “right” or “moral” is up to the viewer. But as I said actions have consequences. Her decision to threaten Walt contributed to him not helping her. Her decision to once again take heroin contributed to her death. If she hadn’t threatened him he would’ve helped. Simple as that in my book. I referenced Batman to explain Walt’s decision because it made sense to me and I’ve never actually been in Walt’s position as I’m sure few have been. Is not helping the same as killing someone? That’s up to the audience. Everyone has a different opinion on the subject and that’s the point. My point was that Walt perceived Jane as a bad person. So why would he help her? It’s easy for the viewer to say they would definitely help because the viewer has the whole story. Walt is going off of what he knows of her. She threatened him and “took” his partner. Walt is vindictive and wanted to get back at her in that moment. No one said he was right, but I understand his decision. Again I used my personal life to empathize with Jesse because it’s what I know and makes sense to me. Also Jesse and Jane are different in that Jesse didn’t threaten Walt. Jane did. If someone threatens me and that’s all I know about them, they aren’t getting my respect. It doesn’t matter if they are threatening to expose my own wrongdoings, why would I help them when they have no respect for me? That’s how I see it and how Walt probably saw the situation since he didn’t know Jane’s good qualities🤷🏻‍♀️

OhKayy

I completely get your opinion and I’m not saying your reference was wrong or bad, just that I found it ironic with how it plays into the show. What I should have added was that while most viewers understand this is a messy and complicated decision that’s still bad. Walt truly has it in his head that he is the Batman in this situation, but I’m sure through Jane’s perspective the roles would be swapped. I don’t know if she was madly in love with Jesse but she cared enough to not like the way Walt was treating him. In her head it was as simple as killing two birds with one stone, the nasty man leaves her lover alone and she can escape her problems by getting drugs and eventually running off with Jesse. You’re right, it’s easy to denounce Walt’s decision when you’ve seen sober and romantic Jane but it’s also easy to write off Jane’s choices when you aren’t a desperate addict who only knows Walt is some manufacturer with a regular white picket fence life who is withholding Jesse’s money. She doesn’t know why he’s doing crime just that he’s doing it so why should she care if he gets caught? Again I’m not attacking you or your ideas at all, it’s obvious you’re not Walter’s biggest fan and you weren’t hoping something bad would happen to Jane. I mention the other deaths he was involved in because this is the first killing that doesn’t occur because of physical violence, so it’s the first murder the audience can’t fully side with Walt on and coincidentally it’s the first one he doesn’t break a sweat over during the process. I think he cries after because he realizes that while she was a problem it wasn’t something he was frantically forced into doing like Crazy 8 or Tuco- they threatened him in a very different way than Jane did, he had time to think before he even arrived at the house and he certainly pondered while she was choking. As I said before I personally feel like he directly played a part in her death, this is not to offend your character at all but I personally don’t like bystanders and I believe it’s a cop out- he made his choice so he can hold himself accountable…but he doesn’t…he holds and rocks Jesse like it’s nothing and allows Jesse to believe everything is on him. I also think I’m a lot more sensitive to her character and storyline due to Euphoria airing right next to you reacting to this show. Rue has also done some very drastic and dangerous shit trying to get her next fix, I’ve watched Breaking Bad a good handful of times and every time a part of me roots for Jane’s dad to enter her in rehab the day he found out she was using again. I agree that she dug her own grave as soon as she joined Jesse in that room but so did Jesse and so did Walt but so far only two are dealing with those consequences while the third party gets to cradle his newborn like nothing happened. Basically…I’m gonna need him to lay in the bed he made. Love your reactions and chatting with you!

Good discussion and I totally see both perspectives. To me, Jane is not that different from Walt. He just had the advantage of not being a drug addict. He’s a power addict. Jane was a threat in many ways. She brought heroin to Jesse when he was vulnerable. He made his decision while he was distraught and that could be seen as Jane taking advantage of his pain so that she could start using again. Walt deciding not to save her life isn’t any different than Jane risking Jesse’s life every time she helped him shoot up. Jesse could’ve easily died any one of those times. That makes her a threat to Jesse as well. Whether she deserves to die because of it is a different issue. Walt is selfish and Jane is a vampire. Jane was just as dangerous and manipulative as Walt and if desperate enough could’ve been as bad as Tuco who was also an addict. No I’m not an addict myself but I’ve witnessed enough to see how addicts can be their own worst enemy. By Jane threatening to expose Walt she didn’t even realize she would be exposing Jesse as well. Jane can’t willingly take heroin and threaten a drug dealer and expect him to help her. To me, she and Walt are the same. Walt was a drug dealer by cooking and distributing drugs and she was a drug administrator by procuring and giving drugs to someone she supposedly loved or cared for. She declared war by threatening him, but they are the same. He just won by not helping her. She literally made her bed and lied in it.

In my opinion Walt is responsible for Jane's death because she was lying on her side (she explicitly told Jesse how important that is) until Walt shook Jesse and she rolled onto her back. She would probably have died of her addiction at some point but we can't know that for sure. I think that Walt indirectly caused the plane crash but I wouldn't say that it's his fault because so many other things contributed to it happening.

Pilots obviously do have eyes, but airliners travel at over 500MPH and it wasn't a head-on collision. Their courses converged (very quickly) on a particular point in space. They would have had very little time to notice an aircraft out of the side window of the cockpit and determine that it was a collision risk. From a 2013 Washington Post article - "U.S. air traffic controllers made 41 'high risk' mistakes last year, including seven that could have ended in catastrophe, the Federal Aviation Administration said Thursday.". The article says that in total, air traffic controllers made 4394 recorded mistakes in that year. Jane's father just got very unlucky! People do usually get away with screw ups like that, but sometimes they don't.
