First off, i want to apologise because i came off as quite rude on my last comment, of course everyone has different opinions which are no more or less valid than anyone elses. Im sorry. You are right, it isnt them. But i think if my memories were duplicated exactly as i am now, i do think the 'other me' would think they were real so its understandable why Bill and Nardole thought they were. Im not a fan of how they made the 1st Doctor so sexist, he wasnt that way during his run. He was sometimes, yes, due to the time he's from but i feel Moffat hammed it up a bit. The Christmas Armistice did really happen, it didnt happen everywhere along the front lines but what they showed was apparenly quite accurate, theres photos. They exchanced souviners, played football with helmets ect. This happened about 5 months after the fighting started and there were other truces throught the next year or so but by 1916, any truces were out the window. This started when German soldiers started singing so im glad they kept the accuracy there. Its pretty crazy it even happened honestly. A human miracle indeed. The Doctor mentioned he changed the time zone he took the Captain back to by a few hours so i guess this always happened in canon(?) Idk, this show rewrites canon all the time so i cant be too mad 😂 Its quite funny the 1st Doctor said he assumed he'd get younger and 12 was like "i am younger!?".. considering Capaldi is the oldest person to play the Doctor. Im suprised they didnt use the Amristice in a previous christmas story in all honesty but glad they saved it for the end of 12. There was a BIG wait between this and the start of the next season and each season after has been a longer wait.. this aired in 2017 and we are only just getting the 13th season on the 31st. So everyone was well rested and ready for Jodie. Its also good to mention here that this was the composer since 2005, Murry Gold's, last epsidoe too, thats why throughout the episode you can hear lots of different music from throughout the show. New show runner, new doctor, new companion, new composer.. pretty much everything was changed so if youre looking for basically a new show, youll enjoy it i think. Same as with anything i like and dislike things about the new direction they take it but im excited for you to discover it yourself. Hopefully everything is going well for you and you come to love the show again soon 💛

I was willing you to Google the Christmas Armistice ha ha but yeah it's true and is a footnote in history. Truth is that Moffat never intended to write this but was made aware Chibnall's Season 11 was still a long way away so if he hadn't of made it there would be no Xmas DW has Chris made it clear he wouldn't be introducing the 13th Doctor in a Xmas special. A beautiful end for Capaldi who I hold closer to my heart than Matt Smith throughout his run but we move on, next "The Woman Who Fell To Earth"..Change is a-coming

The thing I'd say about the Christmas Armistice is that if they did decide to keep doing that then surely they would have been shot for being traitors. Either way most of them were probably there because they knew there wasn't another way. Like surely they wouldn't have wanted to kill each other but if they didn't hold there place then it could result in their country being taken over or their families dying. At least they got one day of rest and happiness

It's definitely weird but the Christmas Armistice did actually happen! I also agree that that wasn't actually Bill or Nardole but I disagree about the happy ending. She gets to travel the universe at least? I guess that's something. OH, also, there is actually a virtual minisode that Moffat wrote last year that follows up Bill's story: https://youtu.be/XOJ0OU6Odh4 Anyways, we're done with the Moffat era now... on to Chibnall. 🙂

Ian Smith

The Christmas Armistice is legendary in the UK :) As I understand it,many of the soldiers on both sides needed to be relieved of duty on December 26th,as they were no longer able to kill the people they had become friendly with. It's also worth remembering that, despite their physical appearance in this episode, many of the soldiers in the trenches (on either side) were barely out of their teens. Yes,the Captain is an ancestor (I think Grandfather...but I may be wrong) of Classic Who's The Brig.

And we're done with the Moffat era! I'm glad you overall had some fun with this wrap-up; as I've said before, I'm excited to see your thoughts on the show moving forward, as I believe the level of change is exactly what you're needing with Doctor Who-- but we'll see! (Also, the music you recognized as 'Donna's Theme' is actually Eccleston/The 9th Doctor's from Series 1. This episode marks the end of Murray Gold, the composer for the show since you started, so he brought back a number of his old work)

Yes the Christmas Armistice is fascinating. I think it says a lot about how the soldiers are just pawns and doing what their 'countries' are telling them to - that they are all just human beings really. And yes they go back to killing the next day, because that is their job. :( It's so sad really. This episode is definitely better than the previous one for me. Fascinated to see what you think of Jodie's run. On first watch I didn't like her seasons at all, but there are certain things about them that I find much more watchable than Season 10. And I actually think Season 12 has two or three really superb episodes - the best for years for me.

I see your point about them resuming killing each other the next day, but I think there is something nice about the men rebelling and deciding that they would make that day a good day. Choosing to try to add to that 'pile of good things'. Yes, things decayed again, but they always do. Nothing stays good forever. As other people have mentioned, they did have to fight eventually or they would have faced punishment.

I think everyone has said it well enough. It will be very interesting to see your take on what comes next. I'm actually looking forward to your usual candidness and unique take. So like usual don't hold back one iota. Everyone I've seen watch from this point onwards has been way too diplomatic for my liking. For some context. As a reminder. These are the DW episodes penned by Chibnal up to this point. S3E07 42 S5E08 The Hungry Earth S5E09 Cold Blood S7E02 Dinosaurs on a Spaceship S7E04 The Power of Three I hope you can also start to enjoy more episodes again. Which of these was your favourite?

otherboy

I really liked The Power of Three. And The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood were decent even though I was probably cursing the screen when Rory died. 44 and Dinosaurs were 👎🏼

I remember learning about the Christmas armistice in school. It sounds so unbelievable but it really did happen ahhaa.

Last night in soho would be a great movie to react to for Halloween or anytime

I really don't like this episode. One of the weakest Doctor Who Christmas specials for me. It has the crime of being so utterly boring and unnecessarily dragging out Capaldi's regeneration when he already could have ended on a good note with The Doctor Falls episode. But this special is just the definition of filler. I really don't care for a great amount of this episode. Things I liked about this episode - The ending. The last few minutes with the Christmas Armistice and 12 saying goodbye to all his companions through Testimony is the best part of the episode. Arguably the only worthwhile part for me. Those parts are where I felt the emotions coming through genuinely. It's just a shame that it wasn't the real Bill and Nardole saying goodbye. I wish we could have got another series with 12, Bill and Nardole together but with a different showrunner and writer. They were good together while it lasted. Things I didn't like = Everything else. I really don't like this episode it at all and it's due to numerous reasons - The way Moffat wrote The First Doctor was very inaccurate and felt like a bad parody. The First Doctor was never sexist and he never instructed his female companions to do the cleaning. This feels like a very disingenuous and bad portrayal of The First Doctor who initially starts out as cold and dismissive in his early days. I find this annoying because this gave me the wrong impression of The First Doctor until I actually watched his era. I don't know why Moffat decided to do this? - I don't like the fact that they brought Bill back as an Avatar to be honest. I still like that it gives 12 the chance to say goodbye to her but at the same time, it's not really her and for some weird reason, Testimony keeps insisting its the real Bill when we know its not. I don't agree with memories being the only thing that makes a person. The real Bill and Nardole for that matter don't really get proper closure like you said. Clara eventually gets it due to 12 remembering her again but it kinda sucks that 12 doesn't get to see the real Bill and Nardole at least one more time. I still don't think Bill would leave The Doctor even if she believed he was dead in the last episode. I actually wish she could have stayed on to meet the 13th Doctor to properly flesh out the dynamics even more. - 12 having to share the limelight with the First Doctor means that he doesn't get to have the full spotlight in his final episode. After Doctor Falls, it just makes everything feel anti-climatic and unsatisfying for me - The concept and scenario of the different Doctors meeting also starts to feel very gimmicky and repetitive at this point. Also no disrespect to the actors who played the Classic companions but they look nothing like the original actors. I don't think they even tried to make them look remotely similar. This kinda becomes a problem with the Classic Who nostalgia feeling a bit too artificial. I wasn't completely convinced with Bradley's performance as the first Doctor either. - It's a bit weird to have Rusty suddenly reappear again when they could have done this in the later episodes of Series 8. At this point of the series, he would be a distant memory to the audience so I'm kinda just left having no reaction to his return and the "Good Dalek" line does nothing for me. - The Regeneration scene itself drags on for me. The drawn out speeches and everything just feels way too laboured to the point where I'm literally getting impatient and wanting Capaldi to finally regenerate. Lots of the jokes, attempt of witty dialogue and remarks aren't funny in this either. The browser history joke is overused and Moffat is clearly exhausted at this point. Everything about this story just feels heavily laboured with lots of waiting and slow moving. As if its stalling for time. Yeah, I just don't like this. But yeah. Congrats. You're officially done with the Moffat era. Sorry to say but the Moffat era is still my least favourite era of New Who at this point. I've tried so many times in rewatching and attempting to give it more chances but it just doesn't click with me. It starts off well with Matt Smith's first series but it starts to go downhill for me after Series 5. I already sound like a broken record at this point but Series 7 to Series 9 are some of my least favourite series and moments of Doctor Who. I feel like it got its spark back in Series 10 but it dropped the ball at the end and by this point, I'm so exhausted with Moffat which made me glad to finally see him go as I felt he overstayed. I couldn't even watch the whole of this era live because it just really tired me out and made me lose interest. Capaldi is a great actor but I find a majority of his stories to be lacklustre. He had a lot of potential to be The Best Doctor but I always felt like the writing really let him down. I only liked him in Series 10 whereas I struggled to connect with his era during Series 8 and 9 which I feel had very low points in the series. But Bill and Nardole saved it for me by pulling my interest in the series back for Series 10. I'll be very curious to see what you make of Jodie Whittaker and the 13th Doctor's era. Chibnall will now be the showrunner going forward. I overall have very mixed and conflicted feelings on his era but I'll probably reserve my thoughts until you watch the episodes themselves.
