My thought about Liz seeing Caroline with blood all over her face and came back to life is because she knows that Caroline is not ready for her to go, she knew Caroline was angry at herself for giving her blood so she might thought that Caroline would lose her mind if she couldn't say goodbye to her and be forgiven about it.

Not sure if you understood Papa Parker right, he said if the twins would not merge the coven will cease to exist when he (the leader) dies. This would also include Liv and Luke as well as Kai and Jo, they are part of the coven. So the lives of all members of the gemini coven are bound to the leaders life. The merge is their way to determine the knew leader so the coven can live on. Problem is now they can't kill Kai because if they kill him they all will die ! So they need to find a solution to handle Kai. Thats what Papa Parker wanted to prevent, Kai unkilable as the leader of the gemini witches

Yeah, and there you have why they can't just skip the merge ... It's basically a curse put on the coven (even though they don't really call it that) but with calling it curse it is much easier to understand
