Rocking that hair!

I don't think Clara remembers all those other lives when she stepped into the Doctor's timestream - at least no more than some vague dream. As for the Doctor's attitude toward Danny and soldiers, I feel at this point it is very much a self-hate which he's projecting. Throughout his lives he's always strived towards pacifism, but then found himself in the middle of battles, often resulting in many deaths. And he's still very much trying to relearn how to relate to humans - something I really like seeing. I actually enjoy the fact that he seems oblivious to Clara's good looks, and fumbles with his interactions with people (due in part because his mind is on a higher plane to everyone else). Oh, and "squadie" is slang for a soldier. If you think back to s05e03, Victory of the Daleks, when Amy tries to talk to one of Churchill's Daleks, it kept saying "I am your soldier", and she replied "Yeah, love a squadie". Loving your reactions to these.

The doctor was definitely doing WAY too much this episode. As much as Danny isn’t my favourite character his attitude to Danny was disrespectful. He didn’t do anything at all, maybe he messed up the mission at first but other than that he was great. As soon as the doctor sees a soldier, he just goes off. But Danny isn’t even an active one😭 In terms of putting companions in danger I feel like every doctor does this. This is just one of those times we see the situation from an outside perspective. The introduction scene with them flying about also emphasised just how crazy it is which we didn’t get with Amy and Rory for example. With them it was discussed more on the angle of Amy flying with another man rather than endangering herself (from my memory). This is a more realistic take which I like. The doctors get comfortable with their companions and let them run amuck. Clara loves the feeling of control and strength it gives her so she goes along with it. She doesn’t just like being a companion, she likes being the doctor and filling his role. And the doctor lets her do that (which is a bit reckless). In the past few episodes, the doctor has called her Boss. I find their relationship very interesting and unique to the other companions. Also, the off brand Matt Smith even had a bow tie lol that’s what got me. Although you don’t like this Doctor your reactions are honestly so much fun. I think your discussions are a lot more interesting this way than if you had liked him straight off the bat.

Yes! I had a similar haircut to you today - now that our lockdown has ended. It feels so good not to have hair :D I actually love this Doctor's abrasiveness, because it's such an effective contrast to the more recent incarnations. He's entertaining simply because he IS so abrasive :)

Yeah, Twelve can be a jerk but I did enjoy near the end Danny realizing the Doctor’s true motivation in regards to Clara: DANNY: It's all right, it doesn't matter. I don't need him to like me. It doesn't matter if he likes me or hates me, I just need to do exactly one thing for you. Doctor, am I right? DOCTOR: Yes. CLARA: What? What one thing? DANNY: I need to be good enough for you. That's why he's angry. Just in case I'm not. CLARA: He, er, he did just save the whole world. DOCTOR: Yeah. Good start.

The Doctor has a history being a big old hypocrite about soldiers, anybody using weapons, etc. I think this incarnation is particularly harsh. You say you can't stand him. Well, the bright side is that there's scope for improvement! 😂 It is still early days and he evolves a lot.

Yes, Danny's theory about the Doctor just wanting him to be good enough for Clara is probably a big part of it, but I reckon there's a good amount of simple jealousy in there too.

What's interesting, now I'm just thinking about it. This Doctor is quite the counter to the previous. 11 seemed to seek adoration to a certain degree. We know that was a motivation with Amelia. His identity was so elevated to be adulated or feared, that it raised armies for or against him. Which perhaps feeds into his distain for any kind of soldiers after so many battles over hundreds of years. Although I think is immensely unfair to Danny. This is one aspect of 12's personality I don't like. But it's nice that they have Danny explain how he precieved his motivations. This Doctor seems to go out of his way to be disliked. They have all sort a companion for what ever reason and all have put them in harms way. This one perhaps is just responding to "The man who can turn an army around at the mention of his name." Each one takes all the memories and emotions and tries to reconcile them in a new mind. Which can make for some fascinating writing opportunities. What I like the most about this Doctor. It's not that there are far more cracks, but that they are more on the surface.

Evan!!

I really think the character dynamic here is really interesting and well done, despite the messiness. The episode has these characters being kind of gross and possessive and toxic but I like seeing that play out on screen. It's hard not to read the Doctor's behavior with Courtney and Danny in the episode as, like, racist though which dampers it quite a bit in my eyes, but I genuinely liked seeing these people navigate their toxicity.

I think a lot of the problems you have with this Doctor is what for me made him so compelling lol. I think I was ready for a different interpretation of the role and that's definitely what we were served. That's not to say what you said isn't valid! He is absolutely hypocritical, judgmental, etc. What I like is that it's all on the surface, and the show (Clara, Danny, even himself) calls him out on those things, so the show knows what it's doing in terms of his character and portraying him a certain way. (I would say this is what sets him apart from previous Doctors. They knew how to hide all these negative aspects of themselves, and a lot of the times they were not explicitly called out on them in the writing/script.) Though I can understand how it's frustrating for some! Can't wait for your commentary for the next two episodes in particular ;)
