I don't think Ian's Bipolar came out of nowhere at all. I think there have been signs all the way since season 3, and, in my opinion, the uh.... traumatic event from s3 that should not be named is what truly triggered it (you know, besides his whole life of stress, poverty, and other traumatic events, aka season 2 monica). I think it's safe to assume he went through his first manic episode during his time in the army, and ever since we first saw him working at that bar, I mean, it was pretty obvious. You know you don't even need full blown-out psychosis during the manic episode to be diagnosed with Bipolar I (which is the one he has), so yes, even though the whole Jesus and demon talk are obvious signs of psychosis, that's not a necessary symptom of Bipolar. And as for general symptoms, he ticks A LOT of them, pretty much a textbook representation lol. Oh, and also I'd like to comment on something you said last episode about him engaging in sex with strangers and doing that porno (while being in a committed relationship mind you). I think you said it's pretty normal for where you live, which I cannot say anything about bc I'm not even American lol, but I'm pretty sure that what you meant was that it's common, rather than normal. Either way, what he did would definitely be written down as poor and impulsive decision making that could potentially have bad consequences, which is again a symptom of Bipolar disorder. Btw, this is not me nitpicking at you! I just find the topic really interesting, and, well, since I'm a psych student and all, I thought I'd give my 2 cents for once since usually I've got nothing interesting to comment. And if anything I'm saying is inaccurate, anyone please feel free to correct me. Really enjoyed your reaction! I love how much you talk in the end, I enjoy hearing what you think.

Yeah as far as it coming out of nowhere (for me), I felt that Ian was the most stable character and didn’t show signs until he came back from the army. Up until then he seemed fine. And even then the things he was doing were yes common or typical of someone who was finding himself, especially someone gay who was finding himself. The things he was doing up until stealing the baby were typical of many people who aren’t bipolar. Like I said, the sleeping with strangers and doing porn is very common in many places and for the gay community. And since I’m a gay man and live in Los Angeles I know. And those decisions may be poor and impulsive but it doesn’t automatically mean someone is bipolar like I said in my reaction. I’ve made some of those same poor and impulsive decisions myself and as far as I know I’m not bipolar. So for me it came out of nowhere as in there weren’t any signs before the army

Fun fact about this episode: Noel, who plays Mickey, couldn’t stop crying when they were shooting the scene at the psychiatric hospital because he felt so sad for both Ian and Mickey :( So the tears of him in that scene were actually real tears.
