I love this episode I get a nostalgic Douglas Adams/Monty Python vibe from it. Old sci-fi seemed to have in the writing this secular feel of not wanting to take itself too seriously. This had that perfect combo.

“I’m curious how this episode was received by fans. I don’t know how to feel about it” … which was pretty much my reaction at the time. Some folks felt there was too much crammed into one episode while others were in glee at seeing children Amy & Rory and completing River’s origin story. Perhaps the episode could have been helped by being a two-parter, but I just choose to take the additional character development and continue with the series.

That's my viewpoint as well. I disliked the smugness of River Song, and lost any affection for her at this point. The humour is also too excessive for my liking;and at odds with the tension of the previous story - BUT,the episode has lots going on,and is a crucial part of the ongoing narrative. So,like you,I take what it has to offer and continue onward.

This probably had a mixed response. Typically Moffat, cramming perhaps too much in and trying to tie things up after the extended mid season break. But I still like it for the ludicrous romp that it is. The best of this season is yet to come, though, with some really outstanding and emotional episodes.

This episode was worth it just for Rory punching Hitler, saying "Shut up, Hitler!", then locking him in the cupboard. 😂 But yes, a bit of a weird episode, and season! I think the next episode is a bit dull, but episodes 10 and 11 are really good.

Love River Song, love this Episode. She’s a teenager here, she’s supposed to be bratty. But I will concede Pandorica Opens/Big Bang was peak River.

I agree with all you wrote. I also think a lot depends on the message for River Song that the Doctor whispered into Melody’s ear. What did the Doctor say to her? I have an idea, but it would be a spoiler to say more.

Rewatching this episode, it's still incredibly frustrating. For every good scene, there's a terrible one, and the structure is baffling and mostly there to keep you guessing. I can imagine a version of this that's excellent, but it's obvious to me the story was written on a tight schedule and was kind of rushed. It has a lot of hallmarks of Moffat's over the top nonsense that's his default filler style which only really came through as his tenure went on. Generally, I have nostalgia for this series of episodes but it's... a lot and definitely not my favorite.

I genuinely believe this is one of the worst episodes of Doctor Who. It's way too messy and convoluted for its own good and I absolutely hate what they did to River Song here. Probably one of the worst ways you could develop her story. The humor isn't funny either. Also Amy and Rory have little to no reaction to living without their baby because she grows up. Yeah. This is an episode that summarises why I'm not a big fan of the Moffat era in general. This is the point where my interest in Doctor Who stops and turns sour. There's always an era that you'll either love, enjoy or hate in Doctor Who and unfortunately this era is not for me. I actually liked the first two episodes even with their flaws but this series immediately goes downhill for me after The Doctor's Wife episode. The arc for this series isn't very compelling either.

okay thats your opinion but you didnt have to say every reason why you hate it. imo this is my favourite seaosn and i love the arc.

I feel very mixed about this one. I mostly just remember it for the Mels/River twist at the start.
