I think its interesting how torchwood has always seen aliens as a threat whether in doctor who or torchwood unless proven innocent probably being the main reason the doctor doesn't like then. You could see it that Beth being black and being treated poorly could be telling the viewers that earth automatically assumes other alien races dangerous which in 10,000 years time could be seen as bad as racism is now. Maybe the reason the doctor hates violence and is reluctant to kill is because the time lords are so advanced that not liking/ treating aliens different because of their race is considered wrong.

Yeah, I try to avoid the word "triggered" as well, just because it’s been mocked so much and misused. A lot of media though, from the 90s and early 2000s made me, and still makes me, feel "that way". There’s definitely a difference between US and U.K. to be kept in mind, but that doesn’t change our personal references and traumas. For me, I’ve seen several Americans at this point, react the same way to burglars getting any kind of sympathy. That’s alien to me. In Norway, you wouldn’t be justified in any way to kill a burglar, unless they were directly threatening your life. (Life over possessions.) I know one Norwegian man came to visit his American girlfriend and to meet her parents for the first time. He hid behind a bush in the garden,( to be funny) and the would-be father in law shot him to death. So cultural differences....I guess 😱 I loved the actress who portrayed Beth she made me love that character in record time. Great performance. (Looked her up, her name is Nikki Amuka-Bird)

These days a pound is about $1.26, but in 2007, the pound was a fair bit stronger against the dollar, and it was about $2. My dad and stepmother had a nice trip to Las Vegas around that time! 😀 Things have seemed a bit more expensive in my own more recent travels in the US.

About the burglar thing, we have the right to use reasonable force in self-defence in the UK, including to kill if there is no other choice. A licensed gun owner using their gun in self-defence against an intruder might be considered to have used reasonable force, though the ownership of firearms specifically for self-defence is very much discouraged. But it's quite likely for somebody to be arrested on suspicion of murder for killing an intruder and interviewed, even if no charges are brought, or if they are eventually acquitted. A couple of years ago, police chiefs and prosecutors published a joint statement saying that in the case of direct defence of life (not property!), disproportionate force may be considered reasonable in extreme circumstances (for example if you don't have a chance to consider exactly how much force would be necessary to repel an intruder in the heat of the moment).

I love the jeopardy of this situation with the sleepers, it really was a good episode and kudos to that stunt woman/man they really threw themselves into that car to enact the blast!! 👏 Beth's demise was so human in the end, great story.
