Looking forward to watching this tomorrow.

Welcome to all new WHO. New actors, new crew, new production show runner, some minisodes for fun, and some really cool adventures. Still got composer Murray Gold though (hooray!) and Nicholas Briggs, who does many of the monster voices including the Daleks.

Watching it now. :) I liked how little Amelia interrupted her prayer to Santa by saying "Back in a moment." 🤣

Can’t wait for you to see more of this doctor! Lovely surprise seeing this pop up on my phone

Ian Smith

Matt Smith has an interestingly long and characterful face;which suits his 'old man in a young man's body' interpretation. This is my favourite First Story of NewWho;although Olivia Coleman (already a popular actor in 2010) feels a little wasted. It feels like a fresh start, with very little reference to anything that went before (and a completely new crew behind-the-scenes). A Smith for the Doctor;a Smith for the Director. No wonder I like it :)

As I'm watching it appears to me that this may be an edited version of this episode. Edited for time that is, meaning less of it.

Oh good, it only appears to be small cuts, nothing like they did to the series 3 finale (bastards).

One of the best series openers in DW, I think. And one of the best introductions of a new companion, having them meet when she was a little girl and then reappearing when she’s an adult. Incidentally, the girl playing young Amelia (Caitlin Blackwood), is actually Karen Gillan’s cousin. She’s performed in a few things since, and now as a young woman is the spitting image of Karen G.

Whats great about Matt Smith's performance is that he's playing it as an eccentric alien, a 900 year old man in a young mans body. Funnily enough, he never watched an episode of Doctor Who in his life before he was cast. Initially he auditioned for John Watson in BBC's Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch which Steven Moffat is also the show runner for. He never got the part but Moffat kept making him do auditions and he didn't know what they were for, until one day in a top secret meeting Moffat revealed he wanted him to be the 11th Doctor. Even though he never watched the show he knew it was a big deal and the rest is history.

Ian Smith

Moffat then gave him a bunch of his favourite stories from the Classic era to watch. Smith was particularly taken with a Second Doctor story, and consequently based elements of his interpretation on him (the bow-tie e.g.)

I do love this episode. So much hits the nail on the head for me. Really feels like it encapsulates the mystery and wonder of this strange man literary falling out of the sky. What with having The Doctor Know his new companion from a early age. When thinking about similar moments of reigniting a Doctor companion relationship. Like The Doctor taking Rose's hand and describing how he sees things but then telling her she should forget him. Or Rose's trauma of seeing him change so dramatically but then having him asleep for something like 45% of the episode. I love those incomparable moments. What I particularly felt for this episode, was how this introduction reignited my adoration for the shows risky formular. Coming at a time when we have just lost Tennant. So we are weary of how we going to feel about this new man sauntering way... Ballsy but a nice touch to add our new man stepping through his past faces and declaring to the audience "Hello I'm The Doctor." I'm think I'm gonna design a T-shirt with 14 years since fish custard on it. 😁

Olivia Coleman has been pretty well known in the uk for 15+ years

Good having Nebula as a companion

playing catch up :P - quick point about the timeline - when Amy refused to look away while the Doctor was undressing, that wasn't the day before their wedding - it was 2 years before their wedding.
