Yeah, that was a long ass movie. That’s why I’ve only watched it 3 times in my life now. The first two times were with my mom because she’s very into Russian history and Jewish history. Her dad is half-Jewish and his parents immigrated to America from the Ukraine (Kiev is actually in the Ukraine but it would have been part of Russia back then) like a hundred years ago. My mom was a Russian linguist in the army, and I lived on Army bases in Germany as a kid so I was taught a lot about the history of Europe leading up to WWII and was fascinated by it (and horrified). The events in this movie take place a few decades before WWII, before WWI even, but you know there is so much more trouble in store for the Jews who stayed in Europe back then instead of immigrating to America. I winced when Chava said she was going to Krakow. That was pretty much the worst place for her to go. Ugh I got to get back to work. I may write more of my thoughts about this movie later.

So true. I just don’t think I have the strength or the patience to be a parent. I would be worried about them every second of every day and I’d be afraid that I wouldn’t have that unconditional love for them.
