Going by your track record of not really being into stories the fandom loves (twice so far in this series with The Girl in the Fireplace and The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit), I bet you really liked this one. One of the most unpopular DW stories ever broadcast. I actually like this one a lot more than the average fan. I think it has a lot of interesting things to say, it's just that the execution is a bit messy.

I really love this one, like Azmat says an aberrant opinion that deviates from the Whovian standard. The fact that the monster of the week is based on a design from a children's competition winner. Coupled with a quip at the end that made me say. "Did they really just make that reference!" 😳 I love the humour most of all.

Yeah, I really enjoyed this one except for the ending. I really thought Elton would join the Doctor and Rose or that the Doctor would at least save his friends😭

Daryl

I agree. I understand your reaction to The Doctor not attempting to save them, which does appear extremely cold on the face of it. It's sometimes difficult to except that he can't always save everyone and especially those characters we come to love. Not sure that translated well at all in this one. I do agree about the ending. I'd of preferred a happier one. But I guess it was designed to reinforce the perspective of learn to recognise the best in what you have. I just the love the oddity in that concept, but would of much preferred the restoration of the whole of LINDA. 😥 Your totally right, it was about shooting commitments that fact that David and Billie were not in this one a lot as they were off shooting other stuff. Further down the road, not saying what or when, but there is another story that uses a similar format but it does a much better job of pulling it off and that is considered to be one of the best episodes.

Spot on in your analysis. Thus one gets way more hate than it deserves, partly due to there being so little of the Doctor and Rose, and because the format is so different. However, I like the quirky narrative style, the characters and the humour, and I think Jackie really shines here as well. I agree they spoiled it a bit at the end with Ursula's face in a paving slab - they could have ended just with Elton's reflections and it would have had a greater impact. And the monster's a bit daft, but it was the winning design of a 10 year old on the kids show Blue Peter, and fits the quirky nature of the story. The reason there is so little of the Doctor and Rose in this one, I think, is in part due to scheduling commitments - they have a very tight filming schedule for the 13 episodes (plus Christmas special), so writing a "Doctor-light" episode helped keep things on track. I still really like this story. It has a really endearing quality, and is quite unique, so I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Yay, someone else who enjoys this episode. It's just so much fun and filled with comedy, with the right mindset you'll like it. And tbf, don't hate the Doctor for this, if he could've saved them all he would have done, literally all he could do was what he did, save part of Ursula, so don't blame him, he's not all powerful, as Mr. Kennedy said, there is no reversing the process. And he wasn't emotional because he doesn't often get emotional, he didn't know these people and had literally never met them, and the amount of death he's seen in his 900 years of life, he can't afford to become overly emotional about anyone around him who dies. Just me defending the Doctor's character there.

Mmm he showed more concern for that alien pig creature in season one than these people lol 😭

This episode has grown on me over the years. The scenes with Jackie in particular stand out and it's one of Camille Corduri's nicest performances in the entire series. But I remember having exactly the same response to you when it first aired - the final scene negated EVERYTHING that came before it... just a horrible horrible decision to end, and I don't just mean the implied blowjobs.

Yeah the ending is so unfortunate😩 I was loving it up until then. I liked that it was about regular people
