So I think you picked up on it more at the end, but the society here was very much racist; beyond just them all being white (and pretty much all blue-eyed), throughout the episode Lindy directs hate towards the Doctor specifically... instant block (the AI says 'unsolicited request') compared to not blocking Ruby, saying the Doctor will be disciplined, getting disgusted by Ruby/The Doctor being in the same room, thinking the Doctor 'looked the same' as who she blocked, and of course at the end they direct their hatred solely to the Doctor, not Ruby ('voodoo' for the TARDIS, saying he's not one of them, refusing to travel with HIM because of in-person contact), etc. And in case you need some extra back up, Russell T's said this was the intent in the behind the scenes content... I think the episode changes when you have this context, as the hatred to the Doctor becomes more and more clear and Ncuti's reaction at the end emphasises the weight of him being declined because of his skin colour. I can appreciate reading it more as a social media angle, and the idea of the fact they can't think for themselves, and I think those all still apply - but there's that extra layer on top which adds quite a bit I feel. Interested to see what you think about that and if it changes your thoughts on the episode for better or for worse - I was a big fan of it personally, as I could sense the aggressions being directed to the Doctor as the ep went on and the ending cemented that for me... but it's equally interesting to have stories like this where we can see aspects as completely different commentary

Hmm interesting. I guess I just never thought it would go down the racism route especially in a futuristic episode. I’m also used to a lot of shows having majority or all white people so I didn’t pick up on it right away until at some point I couldn’t remember if I’d seen a person of color but I ignored that thought. Lindy was rude to the Doctor but I just figured it was because she didn’t know him and she was a snooty influencer so I ignored that thought too. Everything was such a micro-aggression that I’m used to that it never registered and racism is rarely in Doctor Who unless it’s an historical episode or racism against another alien race. I think if they were going to go there they should’ve GONE there. I did think they reminded me of the Eloi society from The Time Machine story (futuristic society that were mainly blonde and blue-eyed) but if it was about racism it just didn’t go far enough to me. It makes the episode more interesting though. It’s ironic and unfortunate that I constantly point out how shows are subtly racist and when a show is subtly showing racism on purpose I miss it. I think I’ve told myself that I’m overreacting when I think someone or something is racist or been told by others that I’m overreacting so I’ve learned to ignore micro aggressions in order to cope. So I didn’t want to believe that this was a racist society in this episode and that the protagonist we were following was also racist. That makes me sad which is how the Doctor felt at the end when he realized it too. It’s just an icky feeling. But I guess that was the point of the episode.

73 Yards & Dot and Bubble were the first episodes shot way back in November 2022-January 2023, and you're right, they were written to accommodate Ncuti's lack of availability owing to Sex Education. This was the filming order: BLOCK 1: 73 Yards & Dot and Bubble BLOCK 2: The Church on Ruby Road (Ncuti becomes available) BLOCK 3: Space Babies & Boom BLOCK 4: The Devil's Chord & Episode 6 BLOCK 4: Episode 7 & Episode 8
