Excellent picture choice for this episode - easily the sweetest moment! 💜 YIKES this show is so layered, complex, and MESSY and I just love it. And it's so fun to hear people's different takes on it. I agree with your assessment right now that it seems like under the current circumstances Wilhelm & Simon's relationship can't really work. But I see the reason why maybe a little differently. I don't see it as Simon wanting too much from Wille. Here's why: When we first meet these characters in season 1, Wilhelm is seen as rejecting his role as prince, having chosen to go to a public school, hating having to give a disingenuous apology to the public after getting into a fight, scowling at everything he's forced to do to keep up the appearance that's expected of him within the royal family, like taking pictures when arriving at Hillerska, etc. We see how other students want to cater to him by agreeing with whatever he says and how Wille hates that. What draws him to Simon (other than initially, his singing and perhaps the visuals...maybe? 😏) is the fact that Simon shows no restraint in expressing his contradictory opinion about the upper class in front of him. Simon never sees Wille differently than anyone else despite him being the prince, and that is exactly what Wille loves about him, that he actually sees the real him. And the real Wille is who Simon loves. That's who we get to see when they're alone together just blissfully happy, sweet and loving, without the pressures of Wille's role bearing down on them. Of course we as the audience feel bad for Wille, who is forced to be the crown prince of his country at 16, feeling responsible for his mother's breakdown which happened directly after he rebelled against her and the royal court's wishes by choosing to be open about who he is and who he loves, and now is having added pressure put on him to be ready to take over as soon as he's 18 if the queen isn't able to continue. I mean it's a lot and it's shitty. But I'd say things are pretty equally shitty for Simon when all he did was fall in love with a boy who happened to be a prince. I've seen some people downplay what he goes through this season but my heart breaks for him. He's also just a 16 year old kid who is being harassed online, bullied at school, stared at and talked about wherever he goes, threatened and attacked at his home, and now silenced by the royal court all because he loves Wille. And the more Wille gives in to the role he's being pressured to fulfill the further away from the real Wille who Simon loves he becomes. So the two things really are at odds with each other - being crown prince and being with Simon. And that isn't Simon's fault nor is it Wille's. It's just. MESSY. Ugh that was way too long I know but it's impossible to be succinct with my thoughts on this show!! The next episode is A LOT and I imagine you may have some strong feelings at the end - look forward to it!! 😝

Right now I feel their relationship is doomed unless Wille either gives up the crown to become a citizen or fights like hell to change the monarchy. Right now I can’t really see him doing the latter but if he does I’ll definitely respect him for it. I feel for Simon but only to a certain extent. I loved him in the first season and some of the second season because I respected him for refusing to be someone’s dirty secret no matter how much he loved Wille. I liked his rebelliousness too but now he’s going too far. He was free to be rebellious before because no one was watching him, he wasn’t in the spotlight. Now he sees what fame is like and sees that it’s not easy to be Wille. He is learning that actions have consequences in the real world. I think people downplay what Simon goes through because he essentially brought a lot of it on himself. No he didn’t ask to be harassed or have a rock/brick thrown through his window but he was also warned by Wille not to do certain things like post on social media. He comes off as entitled because he thinks he should be able to post whatever he wants. If he was a regular person he would be able to protest and post whatever he wanted but he doesn’t realize that he is not a regular person anymore. It’s fascinating to watch but frustrating. I really see in this season how trapped Wille is and it’s sad. Wille may have had more of a rebellious nature before but that was before his brother died. He changed drastically after the loss of… is it Erik? That made him realize he will be king and that he is responsible for much more than he was before. That changed everything. I hope it works out for them though. Fingers crossed.
