August 2023 QOTM - Spiral

Oh, I hope you are prepared for the longest essay answer of all time LOL

When I saw this question I went through all the TYER and re:TYE videos to see what lyrics I actually wrote because I have a habit of forgetting after writing so many of them. I think for this question, we all will have the same tactic of trying to pick a lyric for each person, but I think I might get a bit nostalgic so will try to avoid my recency bias so hope you brought a snack and are comfy for this TED Talk LOL

Let’s first start with TYER lyrics from others that I love because I still get nostalgic and return to some of these songs! A few of my favs from the TYER days:

• Kyoukai no Kanata OP - Kyoukai no Kanata (Lyrics - Sorachu)
• Kyoukai no Kanata ED - Daisy (Lyrics - AmyAnn)
• Nisekoi OP - CLICK (Lyrics - Jefferz)
• Welcome to the NHK - Puzzle (Lyrics - Jefferz & Spiral Collab)
• Fate/Stay Night: UBW OP - Brave Shine (Lyrics - Camille)

These are probably my top 5 that I can still remember despite not having heard them in ages and I think, to me, that shows how well the lyrics were done. I tried to avoid the ones I sang for TYER since I think they were more ingrained in me because I also retain the memory of recording it. I think they’re all great sets of lyrics and I’m excited to one day bring them to re:TYE for a full remaster!

Speaking of, we move onto our re:TYE days! Here is where I thought I would follow the one per person strategy, but this gives me an excuse to really hype up my pals!

愛梨。- The only official re:TYE lyric set she has done for us (so far) is Yuzurenai (Rising of the Shield Hero S2 ED), which I got to sing and it’s such a great set of lyrics. I’m sure there will be many more songs she’ll get to write for us soon and she makes a lot of the direct translations for the songs we need to do in a rush/ones that are lesser known in addition to all the great art so she is a real MVP! I especially loved this whole verse in Yuzurenai and it is my fav part of the song:

So tell me now before you sleep about your dreams

The kind of world you’re hoping for and what it means? 

Before our story fades to time and we just can’t recall 

Even if it’s one by one, I wanna grant them all

Jefferz - He has been writing lyrics for an eternity just like me so we have so many to choose from, which makes this really difficult. I think it’s super easy to choose Kisetsu wa Tsugitsugi Shindeiku (Tokyo Ghoul √A ED) because I think that whole lyric set is masterfully written; there are so many great calls to the show and Jefferz captures the themes so perfectly that it is definitely one of my all time favs we’re ever done. I also love the lyrics he wrote for Zen Zen Zense (Your Name) though I also absolutely love RADWIMPS so I feel like that’s a Spiral bias. If I had to choose my wild card pick for Jefferz, I actually love the lyrics he wrote for Sweet & Sweet Cherry (Golden Time). Jefferz struggles let the fuwa fuwa into his life sometimes but I think this whole section is perfection just for the casual insert of “doki doki”.

Mero - Gosh Mero is getting really good at everything and I’m so proud of her. I am so excited to see more of her lyrics since we only have a few of them so far. Her lyrics are exceptional for Sayonara Gokko (Dororo ED). I remember the first time reading the lyrics and I was blown away by it and then hearing the finished song was just TEARS. My favorite part is definitely the whole chorus section, but the first half flows perfectly and fits beautifully with the show's themes.

Saying a goodbye is something I’m used to

But when it was you, through the waves I cried

Overwhelming grieving had taken over us

As it fades, dissipates, night had fallen into place

Spiral - Lyrics are my passion and you can tell because I have written far too many LOL there are definitely some that I love selfishly. I loved writing the lyrics for Vanilla Salt (Toradora) because I had always wanted to sing it and that is my Yui Horie bias for sure. Assassination Classroom was an important anime for me and so the lyrics for those songs also make me feel like I have a lot of bias…

So if I’m honest with you…it’s a three way tie for my fav lyrics I’ve ever written and here they are:

• Kessen Spirit (Haikyuu)
• Nostalgic Rainfall (After the Rain)
• Kaibutsu (Beastars)

In addition, I was lucky to have some very talented vocalists to bring these lyrics to life, which has only cemented their place as my favs. 

Here are a few of my fav lines from each one just for fun!

Fall and break through, maybe then you’ll know it too

Each scar that you see is a step to victory!

They’ll say “you’re full of it”, but those words won’t make me quit

I think if someone let me go on forever just talking about the fav bits of the lyrics I’ve written and the lore of writing each one then it would be a novel. I’ll end by saying that it is one my greatest joys to be able to write lyrics with these very talented folks at re:TYE and I feel very lucky to be a part of great team!
