Remember in ep 1 when Marie moved into her dorm room and tried to open a window. Her roommate Emma said they don't open or break because students were jumping out and flying off. Based on the phone conversation Ashley was having with the school's Dean, Indira Shetty, it sounds like students were getting depressed (or had suicidal thoughts) when they learned that instead of being BORN super, their powers came from compound V that their parents had them injected with as infants. Yup. A lot of them likely felt betrayed by their parents and they don't feel as special as maybe they did before and rather now like science experiments.
