Ok so how it was explained to me long ago, Brann created a psychic link between Past and present Hodor when warging from the past vision. Young Hodor was witnessing his own death as old Hodor and it destroyed his mind that the only thing he could say from then on was Hodor (hold the door)

Such an iconic episode. Basically Bran did some wild shit by warging into Hodor from his vision linking the past with the present and bc it was Hodor he was warging into the young Hodor became sort of a link and that's why he was echoing what was being said. This scrambled his brain a bit leaving Hodor all he could say and his mind stuck with a child's mentality. This is also why he reacts the way he does to violence. He sees it as a child would. The reason the play is so historically inaccurate is bc history is written by the victors. That is the way the Lannisters said everything went down so to everyone else it becomes a fact.
