This week I worked some more on my 'Melee' project!

Because this is still the very beginning of this project, and because I'm very wary of abandoning yet another bigger project, I'm going rather slow. (also, it's very very hot here in France and doing anything is painful)

The counterpart is that playing around with the code and sprites has let me define a sharper vision for the game and the way it'll play!

I knew the game would be a top-down shooter where you only get melee weapons, but now I also know that the direction I'm taking for the graphics makes the enemies look like hockey pucks and that's absolutely perfect for the game!

Like in the previous iteration of melee, you will be able to slam enemies into other enemies. That 'puck' look, makes it look absolutely believable and very satisfying! And it also makes for big round shapes that are easy to distinguish and aim at!

Moreover, it lets me implement some slightly hover-y movement which gives a different feeling than other top-down shooters. It's also a little reminiscent of bouncing pinballs, which tend to be very satisfying too!

But as I was saying, I only got little progress done on the game, sadly, so I don't have much else to tell you about this week.

I did write a new public Patreon post though! Someone on Twitter asked me about how I used the trigonometric functions to animate things, and I decided to make a post out of my answer! If this is something you're interested about, you can read this post there!

Patreon is where you can support me, my posts and my creations. That support is extremely important to me, and it is like a little fan directed at my heart in this searing weather. Here are the names of all the 3$+ supporters:

Ryan Malm, Joseph White, Austin East, Marcin Majewski, Zachary Cook, Jefff, Riccardo Straccia, HERVAN, Andreas Bretteville, Bitzawolf, Alan Oliver, Paul Nguyen, Dan Lewis, Christian Östman, Dan Rees-Jones, Reza Esmaili, Thomas Wright, Chris McCluskey, Joel Jorgensen, Marty Kovach, Cole Smith, Giles Graham, Tim and Alexandra Swast, Sasha Bilton, berkfrei, Jearl, Dave Hoffman, Finn Ellis, Egor Dorichev, Jakub Wasilewski, amaris, Brent Werness, Anne Le Clech, Jeremy Bouin, Jesse Bergerstock, Jacel the Thing, Pierre B., Sean S. LeBlanc, Andrew Reist, vaporstack, hushcoil, rotatetranslate, Max Cahill, Qristy Overton, Andrew Reitano

This week has been pretty ok all-in-all, but terribly hot towards the end, which makes everything more difficult. Still, progress was made and Melee is shaping up!

This coming week I'm probably going to work more on SUGAR itself. I really want to implement the audio system so I can try and jam out a game with SUGAR in a couple of days. We'll see how that goes!

Have a nice week everyone!

Take care!

Stay cool! Hockey puck enemies are a fun idea. Too bad it can't be like a 4-D theme park ride where you get a blast of cold air every time you swing.
