Chapter 237: AWOL

Where there was one Pathfinder, there was guaranteed to be more. The entrance to my artificial cave would take a lot of work to find. I had dropped the clean-cut stone in the water and been cautious walking around the boulder to avoid leaving signs of my passing. That didn’t mean a lot if they had tracking magic, and my heart rate accelerated. The first Pathfinder climbed the boulder. I told myself it was the best viewpoint on this stretch of shoreline, so his action made sense.

My heart thudded louder as my adrenaline surged, and a second Pathfinder was in range when I pulsed again. It soon joined the first atop my stone domicile. They started a quiet conversation in orcish as the fleet sailed past our position a mile off the shore. The ships were cloistered together with lights on the bow and stern. I tensed when a third Pathfinder moved behind the boulder, and I suddenly felt trapped. I had thought my idea brilliant as I didn’t use aether to conceal myself, which might be visible to a mage, and the insect swarm couldn’t find me with just my narrow viewing slit.

At least I had the aether shield amulet. I reached for it around my neck and panicked when it was gone. Had I dropped it? I retraced my steps in my mind. I had given it to Aesop, but the memory was fuzzy. Had I given him the ring as well? Shit, yes, and the pack of gold.

It took me a few moments to unravel my memories. He must have used a spell form on me to make me obedient. I suddenly didn’t think there were any good Hounds in the Western Empire. I realized while he was showing me the map on his jacket he had been worming himself into my perception of him. Maybe he had been doing it from the moment we met. I concluded that must have been it. The ogre scent was a distraction to overload my senses, so I wouldn’t notice his influence.

It made my current decision all the easier. I just needed to escape the orc Pathfinders first. One of the orcs let out a stream of piss onto the rock, and of course, my viewport was in the path of the waterfall. I blocked the tiny splatter with my forearm and considered removing his instrument for the insult, but I restrained myself. Most likely, the Pathfinders would move away with the fleet, and I just needed to wait it out.

The water was glass tonight, and only the waves created by the passing ships a mile away rippled the surface. The fleet was painfully slow as their priests needed to produce the wind for the massive sails. One Pathfinder jumped down in front of me and walked slowly to the water. He was staring into the shallows, and I cursed my bad luck. He must have spotted the clean-cut stone I had dropped in there, and now Neptune’s Tear reflected off the polished stone. He called the second one over, and even though I couldn’t understand their language, I could tell they were trying to puzzle out why the large, perfectly fresh-cut stone blocks were submerged.

I increased the frequency of earth pulses, and the third Pathfinder had moved south already. These two were not giving up as their hands became animated, and they seemed to be arguing about the stone. I had dropped four blocks in total, all mostly square, to create my six-foot cube chamber. My dimensional space was too packed to hold onto them, and I thought I had been clever about placing them there. My luck got even worse when one of them turned to face the rock. It was dark, and my viewing slit was not large, just an inch in height and six wide. He walked around the boulder, inspecting it and looking for where the quarried stone may have come from. He missed my elevated slit in the dark but stopped at the entrance.

When he called over his companion, I knew my time was limited. My ‘door’ was three inches of stone, but I had made it loose enough that I could kick it out rather than use aether to move it. With the next earth speak pulse, I could tell he had found the thin seam in the stone. One of the Pathfinders had pulled his skinning knife and was trying unhurriedly to get it into the seam to pry open what they must be guessing was a hidden cache. The scratching of the blade on the stone was a bit unnerving as he worked. I pulsed earth speak twice more to ensure I was only dealing with two Pathfinders within the forty feet range of the pulse.

I prepared for the encounter, and when I was ready, I acted. The stone door disappeared into my dimensional space, leaving a surprised male orc to receive a lunging stabbing attack from the orcbane. I had been aiming for his throat, but he reacted quickly and stood. The blade still pierced his sternum, and he bellowed a pained cry. I scrambled out of my self-made prison and tossed all three pellets at the other Pathfinder.

My first victim was still screaming in pain, and I wouldn't say I liked this effect from the sword—it drew too much attention. With my night vision goggles, I could only see one other Pathfinder much further down the shore, probably the one that had passed us twenty minutes earlier. I finished the wailing orc before me and frowned when bright lights bloomed over the nearest ship, illuminating the sky and shoreline like it was the middle of the day. The spores blinded the Pathfinder by the shore and he was not a threat. It was time to run.

I slashed the disoriented Pathfinder in the neck, dashed into the woodlands away from the lake, heading west. I was unencumbered as I raced through the trees. Shadows danced on the trees as more ships cast their own magic flares into the sky. I didn’t think the orc invasion would consider me much of a threat as I was just a single Hound. I was wrong.

The buzzing of insects soon followed me as I tried to open distance from Varvao Lake. My earth speak was a blessing as it framed a Pathfinder waiting to ambush me ahead. Instead, I cut around opposite the tree at the last second and attacked him from the other side before he could react. One air shield and two slashes from orcbane, ended the unfortunate Pathfinder. The lake was awash with activity as the sounds of orcs echoed through the woods, and more aetheric flares appeared overhead. A wasp stung my neck, and I swatted the golf ball-sized annoyance.

I quickly used purify self to eliminate the burning poison from the insect, and I was racing again into the woods. More of the aggravating insects attacked my exposed skin and tracked me as I ran. I was having a really bad night and was sweating profusely with the humid air. I didn’t understand their desire to hunt me down. Didn’t they have a city to conquer? About two hours into my flight, the trees finally went silent, and I no longer heard the incessant buzzing above and coming at me.

I didn’t slow down and tried to run faster thinking I had escaped their range to control the insects. I tried to recover my aether, but still pulsed earth speak frequently. Unfortunately, earth speak couldn’t see flying creatures. I had no idea what crashed into me from above. Whatever it was, it had talons and ripped off my night vision goggles and cut deep into my neck and cheek but failed to grip my shoulder as I twisted hard away. I supposed that grappling the goggles was better than grappling my head. I was still slammed hard into the ground from its attack, knocking the wind out of me. I was in a mostly open area and scrambled for the cover of some dead trees as I drank two of the orc lesser healing potions from my belt. Blood flowed freely down my neck, soaking my undershirt, as I listened intently for the creature in the skies but only heard my heart pounding in my ears.

The rancid taste of the potions hit me and made holding back my vomit reflex difficult, but I couldn’t waste aether on healing myself with an enemy so close. Was it sent by the orcs, or was it just another predator? With only the light of the moon, I scanned the skies as my wounds closed. Wherever the night vision goggles were, I counted them lost. Maybe the Hound caches would have a replacement, but it was not a concern at the moment. There, the stars were blotted out by an avian silhouette.

I raced for the trees and checked on my aether—more than enough to eliminate this threat. I checked twice more to make sure it was diving for a second attack as the silhouette grew in size. It was difficult to get the timing, placement and capture enough of the beast to kill it while running. I attempted to roll away from its talons this time but still got a slash across my back, tearing my Hound armor and getting tossed away like a dirty sock.

The avian creature failed to come out of its dive as it crashed into the ground and continued to demolish a few trees, ending with a pained cry. My aether had bottomed out, telling me I was successful.  I had taken a piece of the wing instead of the head as I had planned. Still, it was effective as the gargantuan bird flailed on the ground, tangled and broken in the corpse of trees.

I guessed it was juvenile Roc in the moonlight, as the wingspan was not impressive at thirty feet. From Hearne’s teachings, Roc’s had wingspans over one hundred feet and nested hundreds of miles south of here. As the raptor flailed and disabled, it snapped its impressive beak toward me in anger at its predicament. It was acting like I had attacked it and not the other way around. I muttered more to myself than it, “Mess with the bull, get the horns, Tweetie.” It was still a dangerous enemy, and I didn’t need to finish it off. I inhaled sharply. Was that a harness on its back in the moonlight? Was there a rider? Could my night get any worse? He must be dead with how hard the Roc crashed and slammed into the trees. If there was a rider, more orcs would be coming and my aether pool was empty.

I tossed a pellet to blind the roc and hobbled away. I was guessing the Roc belonged to the orc invasion forces or some nightmarish pet. Either way, it was not going to follow me, and I had to hope it was the only one.

I tossed away my Hound jacket as it was now mostly shredded. Without the goggles, I was limited to seeing clearly with my earth speak spell form. I reached the cover of dense evergreen greens and finally rested while I recovered aether to heal my wounds. The aether recovery ring was a huge blessing as it doubled my aether recovery. My self-healing told me the damage to my shoulder was severe; I had just been in too much shock to realize it.

I remained stationary while I waited for dawn, restoring my aether and healing the damage. Without the goggles, I was worried about another attack from above in the dark. The aftertaste of the orc potion stuck to my tongue, and water wouldn’t wash it away. The mouthwash potion was at least successful. Miles away, I could still hear the Roc bellowing angrily at its predicament of being grounded and blinded. When the gray dawn sky arrived, I was healed enough and continued my flight westward. I hoped the Caliphate had given up on its pursuit of me. I had to be at least twenty miles from the fleet now. At least, I didn’t see anything in the skies or hear anything that made me suspect I was being followed.

I opened the message book to read it for the last time. No new orders had been written and I would not be writing anything ever again. Hopefully, by my lack of response, they would think I had been killed or captured by the Boutan Caliphate. I sent the book back to my dimensional space for the last time. I used the blood compass to orient myself and ran in that direction, pulsing earth speak frequently.

3rd of 4 for cycle. Note: there was an edit in the last chapter with Aesop (name will be chaged eventually) asking for the artifacts from the mage and the MC handing them over in a haze. One more chapter today or tomorrow, and the next cycle begins on Wednesday. The World Sphere chapter is coming in the next two days as well.

rizen

So what exactly did he lose? Aether shielding is huge, but which ring? The sustenance or aether recovery one,

Caledon Smith

Thank you for the chapter! Fun read, slightly frustrated that he spend hours near the bird and didn’t kill it, just letting it suffer. And slightly disappointed he didn’t take an essence from it as he was right there for so long. Would love to know what it would give.

Bob

Tetsu-nii

I was wondering about the artifacts and gold … Thanks — for the explanation and the chapter! ^_^

alwaysrollsaone

are you talking about the stone? The hollowed space in my imagination would have been 6' x 6' x 6' for him to fit comfortably and stand, that is a signifigant amount of space for his 10'6" cube

Tetsu-nii

The ring he took off the fleeing Mage he caught with Helena(sp?), which Sergius knew about.

Tetsu-nii

I just hope Eryk finds some NVGs at a Hound cache (or that he can get some from Aesop[temp name]'s body after Eryk ganks him). Night vision would be invaluable in his pursuit and later flight from the empire.

Andrew

Thank you!

Snugglebadger

Well so much for Aesop being a decent guy. I guess it makes sense, Eryk needs to kill the hounds and burn down the archive, would be tough to do if one of them wasn't a scumbag.

Deliver roo

I really appreciate the reaction, the fact that he is like “fuck this shit I’m out” is on point. In light of that I like even less the fact that he never had to make difficult choices or suffer consequences for his actions in previous instances while under the hounds, because this would have hit so much more.

Lemes

Now the scene of the MC handing over the amulet and the gold so easily is explained. I found it strange that he didn't try to keep any of the wizard's loot. Now it's much better to know that the centurion's son is a villain like his father. No remorse in finishing him off.

Alex Galaitsis

It sounds like the plan all along was to rob him, presumably to get the dreamscape amulet, then murder him via a suicidal command. Brutal.

Caledon Smith

A few arrows from a distance, spear jab and at least the bird could be out of pain. The birds cry’s I would surmise would be more risky as it provides an audible queue on where he was/is and could attract larger prey. If he stayed in the area it’s not much of a risk if he is already staying. As for the collector, I guess that depends on how difficult it actually is, from the story seems rather straightforward and low effort.

Justin Garrett

Eryk needs to woop their ass for stealing his stuff.

yohan gu

Now, now, wouldn't petty vengeance make the mc evil? Bad form for Aesop to use a charm to extort the mc.

Thresher

Hope he kills Aesop. But knowing the Centurion, he definitely has him checking in frequently and would probably be able to tell if he dies. The mc will probably only be able to take him out in the archives when he destroys it. Thanks for the chapter.

Sean Kauffman

May want to hang a lantern on this. I went back and reread as well thinking both rings were stolen and then seeing the recovery ring mentioned a few paragraphs later

M.S.McGowan

it was grounded and blinded couldn't he just fill it full of paralytic arrows.

yohan gu

Oh, that charm is powerful. I wonder what is the affinity required

Victor Skaarup

Erik is walking around with approx 600 cubic feet empty assuming “magic” stores items efficiently.

Victor Skaarup

6x6x6’ is 216 cubic feet.

Victor Skaarup

Passengers take up 6x3x5=90 cubic feet

Victor Skaarup

Attribute table 4x2x1= 8 cubic feet

Caledon Smith

I understand that you might not want him to be always grabbing up essences as I can understand you might feel he would get to powerful, or it might sound redundant of him constantly stopping and grabbing an essence. But in the situation you created here it doesn’t make sense for him not to grab the essence it’s what’s keeping him alive. It’s also the carrot that you have made for your readers. We love the story and the world you have made, but we also project ourselves into the MC and we want to feel like we are progressing. Every time you create a scenario where the MC could get an essence and get stronger, but doesn’t feels like a jarring slap to the reader that kicks them out of the story. I know I am projecting with this statement but it is something to consider.

Victor Skaarup

Miscellaneous gear 6x6x10= 360 cubic feet

BubblyGhost

Petty vengeance makes a person evil? Damn, guess I'm one hell of a villain for spiking my lunch with ghost peppers since my coworkers kept eating my food.

Victor Skaarup

It can be difficult to visualize exponential difference between square feet and cubic feet without doing the math

BubblyGhost

Man, this new patreon update is nasty

Lemes

Petty revenge? I don't think so. He's simply free to do what needs to be done to help Castile and escape the yoke of the empire. They're actively trying to kill him, there's no reason to hold back or feel guilty about eliminating them.

Zurko

I think what Author means is what incentive does he have to even risk standing around and grabbing, the essence when he is being hunted. the essence he would get could easily be replaced by any of the other thousands of monsters roaming the forest, and since he is basically immortal(age wise) he has all the time in the world to grab up essences in much safer situations. it's not the priority right now.

alwaysrollsaone

he was injured and not combat able (aether was bottomed out). yes, he could have waited while he healed from the second attack and then killed the giant bird, but he would have had to remain there while it cawed incessantly in pain, drawing attention. also, the orc rider was dead nearby...which probably makes you more angry with the author, as the MC wasn't ever aware of it. it you want, I will add some buzzing in the air which spurred the MC to run away, but I assumed he was trying to escape with his life and not concerned with looting. And yes, maybe my intention was to give the reader angst for the MC not acting like he was playing a video game

Victor Skaarup

Lot of items, not all are material volume. Bear meat should fit into two 20 cubic foot freezers. Wine into five wine boxes each 2.5 cubic feet so another 10 cubic feet. Twenty gallon barrels are approx another 10 cubic feet each. Assumption is “magic system” you are using stores items efficiently. By the way platinum marbles were sold to generate funds for the aether protection amulet he didn’t get. Black desk left behind in tower. Summoners belt worn, cannot go in his storage space as it is also a storage device. He has given away at least two back packs. Five hundred books on metal smithing also left behind in mage tower.

alwaysrollsaone

yes the platinum marbles are red on the excel spreadsheet which means they are gone. he has to physcially manipulate the items inside with a little aether - so not perfect stacking - think of it like a closet without gravity - this was mentioned when he released Raelia the first time. the point of the first half of book 4 was for the MC to clean up his space and advance with essences. But he decided to start added people...no idea where Ginger is going to fit. Once a pack rate, always a pack rat. let's say he keeps a quarter (25%) of his space open for his instant kill move as he has to overlay the box and define what he is going to take. For argument's sake, we will define the box as 1331 (11 cubed) in space- leaving 998 cubic feet for items. which I can see as being easily able to fill with the items above. apples for instance 120 apples takes about 8 cubic feet (according to Alexa), so 450 apples alone would be 32 cubic feet. probably another 16 cubic feet in coffee berries (although I may edit in that he hires someone to ferment and roast these while at the Mage College during the edit), the space would be used up very quickly and is not compact. using 216 cubic feet for stone would be a waste of space if that is what we are still talking about. i thought it clever to drop the stone in the water to hide it. It wouldn't have been too visible in the day, but at night with still water, the refractile shape would be easily seen. At least from my experience

Caledon Smith

I see now that either I missed it in the three times I read the chapter or it has now been added the he is now miles away from the crying bird. This is perfect as it fixes my issues with the chapter. Apologies if this was there from the start but I could have sworn it wasn’t. Thank you for the chapter, it was released at the perfect time today saving me from a super boring meeting I was stuck in that didn’t require me to be present.

Lemes

These measurements in feet, yards, inches, and gallons are very confusing to those who use the metric system. But converting 600 cubic feet to metric gives about 16 cubic meters. That's a lot of space! I find it hard to imagine that just those items listed would take up that much space. From what I can tell, 16 cubic meters would be enough to store that entire list (plus the four humans) and still have a decent amount of space left over for combat.

Daniel kanevsky

Wait just to confirm, he took his shield amulet, ring, and gold. I guess he's lucky they think he didn't have his dreamscape amulet, or he would have gotten that too

larback

Can the purify spell purify the stench of ogre piss?

alwaysrollsaone

Centurion Sergius questioned him if he had it with his truth spell when they rode west. He doesn’t know his spell is fallible. So no he does not think he has it but the other pups do

Daniel kanevsky

Yeah I know, that's where he lucked out, that Sergius doesn't can't believe that someone could be lying to him

sdf

So, I’m sure it’s been said before but should he not use his skill to slice up incredibly thin shards of metal, drop them from 10 ft or so, catch them in his space before they hit the ground, then redrop them from 10 ft on targets from above? Momentum is preserved in his space or his captives’ hearts would stop and their lungs would freeze up… so with a bit of work, he could rain death down on his enemies… thin slivers of metal traveling at high velocity (gravity is the easiest, most predictable method, v=at=sqrt(2ad)). Granted he might miss the catch/timing a lot early on but I’m sure he’d get the hang of it,.. his own close-range orbital drop weapon.

alwaysrollsaone

No kinetic is not conserved. If he caught an arrow in flight and released it. It would just fall to the ground when brought back. All kinetic energy is killed in the space.

sdf

Technically he’s not a hoarder unless there are bundles of newspaper in there. Standards.

Karnnie

He must have used a spell form on me to make me obedient. Wouldn't he have felt the magical influence? He felt one when a charm mage attempted to seduce him. Him not feeling the touch on his mind, especially with his stats makes no sense and simply feels forced in order for the author to push the fight we all know is coming and to erase guilt from the MC. Physical senses and magical senses are not the same nor are they connected.

Karnnie

I raced for the trees and checked on my aether—more than enough to eliminate this threat. I checked twice more to make sure it was diving for a second attack. It was difficult to get the timing, placement and capture enough of the beast to kill it while running. The MC would have been much smarter to pull his spear from storage and brace it on the ground at the last second so that the creature could impale itself, then he could have finished it off before it recovered with his sword. Now he is out of aether again... I am really starting to dislike this one trick pony show we are seeing over the last arc. The MC is smarter than this and it is just lazy writing. The MC is also VERY WELL TRAINED. Again, this is simply lazy. All this shows is that the author seems to not have enough time to write the stories and he is in a rush to knock out the next chapter. How do we deal with this monster; personal space. What about this threat; oh right, personal space. Why not keep a sword on my hip or a bow strung across my back, oh right, personal space. His Aether pool is not large and does not refill all that fast, yet. spending a few points to put items into and out of his storage instead of carrying them is again, lazy. I would prefer one chapter a week over 4 rushed and poorly thought out ones.

Karnnie

Why would the others think he had it? they did not see him use it and even when they were watching him sleep and he rolled over, he didnt have it and would have reported that.

Karnnie

Because the sound alone is a dead giveaway that he or something is nearby, plus the MC has a tendency to be greedy when it comes to essences.

alwaysrollsaone

It is the suggestion spell from dnd. He used the distraction of the cache locations so he wouldn’t be aware what was happening

alwaysrollsaone

I couldn’t think of anything feasible for him to stop the fleet. Two hundred plus orcs per ship with multiple clerics on board each. If he got close he was dead. He did manage to slow them when they pursued him. The orc warlord riding the roc (yes it is not mentioned because after losing the night vision I didn’t think he would have noticed him) slowed the fleet to pursue him and finish off the Hound himself. I don’t know about the spear against a few hundred pounds of raptor. Would have wounded its talons for sure but done enough damage to take it out? As for paralytic arrows it would have taken too many for such a large avian

Karnnie

He dropped a dozen trees miles away and then sat in a rock all night, all the next day, and they finally showed up the next night so he was in a rock for 24 hours. He could have felled dozens of trees in that time. As for the ships, he really only needed to cripple one ship, the lead ship and then they would have been delayed in repairs. If there were any reeds near the waters he could have stayed submerged underwater until the lead ship went overhead and then he could have cut holes in the ship along the draft with his space that would have either sank the ship or forced them all to stop and repair the damage. Or he could have approached the ship after they stopped for the night and waited until he was sure they were asleep to do the damage. The way ships are designed, the draft isn't really accessible, it isn't a place where people would sleep, it would, if anything, be a storage space so a few holes along the very bottom of the ship would fill the ship slow enough that it would take a hours before they realized there was a leak (once the bottom draft was full and water started to pool on the walking surfaces), probably most of the night and by that time the ship would be sitting much much lower in the shallow river, probably bottomed out or even beginning to tilt requiring time to repair and remove the water. The first night he could have taken the alcohol or lamp oil from his space and started a ship on fire, it probably wouldn't have sank the ship but by the time it was noticed, especially if it was the last ship, it would have done enough damage to need extensive repairs they probably would have abandoned the ship all together and forced the troops amongst the other ships. Fires on ships spread really really fast. Even on todays ships and they are made of metal. He could have tried to ambush the lead ship by taking a shot at the priest spreading the river by setting up in a tree and waiting for them to get close, He went through hound training, we see how good he is at long shots, he could have been 100+ yards away in a tree just waiting. As for the Spear, the bird wasn't small, it had a 30 foot wingspan and if it was large enough to pick him up then its chest was at least 24 inches wide. Plenty of room for a spear to punch right through its chest, especially if it impaled itself, then as it was recovering from crashing into the ground and a 6 foot spear piercing its vitals he could have simply taken his head with his sword. Then he would have had aether to heal himself and take the essence. Not to mention he would have had essence to use earth speak and find the goggles. I personally do not think he would have left them behind given that the enemy was wounded or dead and no longer a threat.

Karnnie

I checked twice more to make sure it was diving for a second attack. How did he check? Could he see? Earth speak does not work on flying creatures.

I believe the author overloaded himself with too many projects at the same time. He is losing focus on developing a single character. I believe he could focus on one story and do much better.

not all ideas in my head make it paper. Also as far as him giving up the shiled amulet and ring - a reader asked me about it and I was oh shit, Aesop would definaely have asked for that before he left. As far as Aesops ability to charm, his imprinted spell form is 'suggestion' whihc basically makes his target do what he wants as long as it does not harm the person. So - Bartiradians have Griffin Riders, the Telhians have Drake Riders and the Orcs have Rocs (but very few), just a few and only elite warlords ride them. The Roc that attacked the MC had a rider who was leading part of the attack (so his death would cause a hicup in the invasion). I was thinking the orcs were more focused on naval power than air power (cue the sea chanties).

The scenario in my head was he wouldn't escape if he got that close to removing the hull or starting a fire on deck. The orc clerics would have found him. As for the trees, it bottomed out his aether as I figured a 200+ year old tree would have some aether resistance. So I think our 'new math' was 15 minutes to recharge that ability. Since the downed tree was swarmed by insects controlled by clerics, he had to keep moving after each tree was felled. So the 4 trees he did fell were about 2 miles apart as he headed up river. When he reached the inlet, he could drop any more trees and decided to watch and report. He is being asked to stop an armada by himself with no support. I feel it is an unreasonable request to ask a new Hound. I lot of the writing in the last few chapters was to get him jaded to the Empire and make his leaving realistic. I feel he has a lot of loyalty to the men in Castile's company - but outside of that he is more a 'hired gun'

These are all draft chapters. they go through at least 2 more edits by me and through editors as well

Woooooow I cannot believe these negative comments. always rolls a one, I am an extremely avid reader (read probably 4-6 books a week) and have never subscribed to a Patreon until I read your books on Kindle and couldn’t wait for the release. Please ignore a lot of these nit picking comments, your character development is clear, his skills are not a ‘one trick pony’ but rather clear example of how he is not overpowered and has to rely on what he has. The writing is not lazy by a long shot. I’m honestly shocked at the criticism and hope you don’t take it to heart. One of my favourite series, keep up the great work!!

Juarez is right. Its about focus. The Author has one very popular story: soldier. But is focused in re-boot 3 others: sphere, incubus, and builder. Is admirable, but.. is not working. The soldiers fans are feeling neglegted. The chapters are shorter, with less humor, less gripping, less something. Less focus.

Lemes

I agree! It would have been suicide to try to approach the ships. He would have been discovered very quickly and killed by the Pathfinder orcs or the clerics. There was no reason to risk his life for an empire that had always only exploited him and put his life at risk.

Lemes

Yes, perhaps developing this issue of the orc winged knights further would be interesting. The way it is, a reader who doesn't see your explanation would be lost. I think perhaps showing the knight dead or dying and the MC remembering one of his classes with Hearn talking about the orc knights and their monstrous birds.

Enk

trying to reconcile the effort they made to acquire Erick, with the ease of his apparent suicide-orders. From past form, it's not desperation, but some sort of plot by the dukes, but still doesn't make much sense to me yet. The 'dragon shitstorm' book comment is kind of puzzling (from C235) too. Aesop's beguilement-via-map-etc seems kinda overkill too, unless he was afraid of E not complying/going renegade, yet they must see that the suicide orders will force exactly that! Why not just kill him?

Mason W

I am kinda surprised the hounds turned on him instantly. They used him to clean up some dirty work then tried to dispose of him. Not sure why you would get rid of an asset clearly as talented as Erik. I am missing the motive.

alwaysrollsaone

You only think that because you don’t know what is going on in the background. Centurion Sergius pulled his Hounds from the west for his plot with Octavian. He is pulling out his hair at the moment trying to stem the bleeding and willing to sacrifice pawns. It is not that the Hounds are turning on him but the fact he is the only piece in play

Caledon Smith

I hate to say I feel I agree with you on the point of to many other stories. I’ve read a decent chunk of each of the other stories, and while I enjoyed sphere it fell off hard for me around chapter 100-108ish. Soldier is a great story in an interesting world and while I understand the desire to try to maintain multiple series at the same time I truest wish you would focus all your efforts and energy on just one story and write to to completion while perfecting your art and storytelling.

Enk

shennanigans! i might have known. This empire you've invented is really hideous heh.

momo2009

Well he did moved a rock and drop on the monster in the dungeon so maybe just have medium size rock and then move them over the target head and then drop it.

momo2009

Do the monster that give rare essence have the related magic affinity? Like a space essence monster would have it own storage space etc. Hopefully in future adventure you can have the mc fight rare monster or explore dungeon that will expand on the rare and uncommon essence or how such magic works.

momo2009

Can he still be track from the hound tag and identification stuff that was given to him? would make it a shock for him to find out they know and make the final battle at the archave more interesting. And for me i would risk using the aether potion to restore my aether to kill the roc and get it essence but that just nit picking. Great chapter.

alwaysrollsaone

no, object tracking requires the mage to have touched it. and has limited range. he is unaware but they have NO means to track him. he thinks they have his blood

Adunn

Hounds are just following orders. Can’t really blame them for that.
