So it turns out that Ice Queendom is something that they're calling "Canon Adjacent" The first couple of episodes will apparently recap volumes 1 and 2 before the series kicks off on a brand new adventure. While changes to the characters will not be considered canon it seems like the story itself is something that could exist alongside the others in the RWBY universe.
