recently, i learned about a psychology term called "emotional inc*st" which is where a parent tries to have an inappropriate emotional bond with their child. we don't see some of this phenomenon's "parentifying" behaviors with barb and sadie; behaviors like barb treating sadie like a confidant in adult matters that she shouldn't be privy to at her age. but we do see many of the other behaviors: the hyper-controlling behaviors, the behaviors that indicate the parent's inescapable need to be the center of their child's universe. i wouldn't be surprised if there was more to sadie's parental trauma than we're shown, but i'm also glad to see how the two of them seem to be growing from that place of contention anyway.

I don't get Stage Mom vibes from Barb. Well-- Yes, at first, Barb has Stage Mom vibes, but she reminds me so much more of a parent who is out of touch with their child who wants very much to support them so they 100% latch onto one thing they know about their kid. I don't see it as sinister, but as a true disconnect. My parents are out of touch with me (bc I don't share anything personal about myself with them), and I really wish they were super supportive of my slightest interests like Barb is with Sadie. My parents would judge whatever I have my heart set on, and it would (whether they meant it to or not) make my heart ache and make me think badly of the thing I like or activity I want to do (similar to Greg's parents except Greg has the strength to do what he wants anyway). Even things I love aren't safe from my opinion being tainted by my parents' preferences. Long story short, I'm glad to see Barb and Sadie's relationship grow closer in a way that gives each party a deeper understanding about the other in a healthy way, and I'm jealous.
