It was really fun to see your reaction to this! There's a lot of musical styles that come through in different numbers of this show. Romeo and Juliet runs as a narrative parallel with the drama happening between the students themselves! There's multiple other songs that are largely straight dialogue from the play that bring out these tensions. The most iconic songs from the show don't involve the Shakespeare, but I just think it's such a neat element. It's made me appreciate iambic pentameter more than I ever had before.
