Sardonyx and Smokey Quartz are SUCH different fusions and I love how they highlighted that. Sardonyx has Pearl and Sapphire's precision, mixed with Ruby's dramatics. But the thing the show tries to convey is that a fusion is not just the sum of its parts. While you can sometimes see what pieces came from where each fusion IS their own being. They're unique and while the Gems that make up the fusion remember what happened while they were fused, and the fusion remembers their parts, they aren't one and the same. A fusion is going to think differently, react differently, be different, regardless of how long they've been fused. Remember, Garnet, said "You are not two people, and you are not one person, you are an experience." That's what fusion IS, at its core. An experience and every fusion has a different one. In another instance, she said, "I am their fury, I am their patience, I am a conversation." The conversation that Smokey Quartz has is going to be different than Garnets and different than either Steven or Amethyst's. But you're right, a commonality between Steven and Amethyst IS their lack of self-worth and their tendency to speak ill of themselves. They can't spit fire, or aim true, or have the strength of Sugilite, but the other thing they have in common is their love of all things FUN. And that's why their weapon is a toy.

"What do Steven and Amethyst have in common?" Their feelings of inadequacy. Marissa Rosser pointed out above that they also both love to have fun, and I think those are Smoky's components: having fun when they feel good, and miserably self-deprecating when they feel bad. I like your take that Smoky watching Sardonyx made them feel like they could never "measure up" - a phrase Sardonyx actually uses in the episode - but I also think, what really brought them down, was what Sardonyx continuously said to them. "We saw that. There must be more. Where's the MAIN act? You're holding out on me." I don't think Sardonyx recognizes how her words basically translated to "you aren't enough." She certainly realized she hurt them, but she did not realize that it had nothing to do with her "hijacking the show." She was just never satisfied, and Smoky did one of the things they do best: feel inadequate.

I have been waiting for this episode for some time. "I guess zero plus zero equals zero." I'm always looking for someone to react to that line the way I do - shock. Numbness. Inability to process someone putting my feelings right out there like that. I use this show to communicate my self-perception, because I'm... pretty bad at that. Sometimes it's the only way I can tell someone I'm hurting. Hence the long comment. I hope it was interesting to read :^) Thank you for your time.
