Steven's idealized image of his mom being challenged is something I can relate to. Growing up, I adored my father, though I usually only saw him a few times per year. A few years after my mother moved us out of state in my tweens, I learned my father was charged with heinous crimes. He insisted he didn't do anything but was manipulated into a plea bargain, and though my mother believed he was guilty, I chose to believe he'd been falsely convicted. Steven sadly doesn't get to be pen pals with his parent like I did, but at least the gems still love who his mother was. The conflict I felt in the face of my mother's vitriol against my father swayed me toward greater loyalty to him as a son. For Steven, it seems he already has doubts, and the gems' equivocation causes him to feel uneasy without his mother to actually talk to. As an adult now, I understand a lot more, I've come to know better who my father is as an ex-convict, and we have a positive relationship. Whether or not he was guilty is far less important to our relationship than it maybe was during my teens and young adult years. Steven doesn't have the same luxury unfortunately.

On how the gems found Steven floating in space - I’m assuming Garnet used future vision, like the time she used it to find him when he fell out of the warp stream. It’s so cool to see them finally diving into the story of Pink Diamond and her shattering. I love how they eased into that discussion - hinting at shattering early on with the gem shards from shattered gems, leading to the Cluster, then the episode with Bismuth really introducing the ethics of shattering for the first time, then Jasper name-dropping Pink Diamond for the first time before getting corrupted, and now finally it all comes together with the revelation of Rose shattering Pink Diamond. I know most of the plot of the show from watching various clips in a rather scattered ordered, but it’s cool seeing it in order for the first time and seeing that slow build. :D I can’t wait to see your reactions to next season!
