The worst part of a toxic relationship is trying to figure out who you are afterward. You lost so much of yourself during the relationship and gave up so much, it's hard to come back from. It's hard to remember how to be on your own. It's hard to build yourself back up again. That's kind of where Lapis is right now--who is she without Malachite? Who is she in this new world, this new future she has to build? She can't go home, and she has so much trauma tied to Earth but there's nowhere else for her to go. She just has to try and move forward. She did terrible things, but she had terrible things done to her. You have to realize that before she was Malachite, she was trapped in the mirror. And before she was in the Mirror, but was under the Diamond's rule, and all that entailed. Lapis has literally never been her own Gem. She's always been under someone else's orders or trapped. In the Mirror there was no one to hurt but herself. In Malachite, there was Jasper, as trapped as she was, and there to take the blows. I have no doubt Jasper was just as terrible to Lapis as Lapis was to her. Anyway, this episode is a heavy one. Lapis's trauma isn't cut and dried. She misses being Malachite because at the very least it was familiar. She was trapped and in pain but she had someone to take it out on. She knows it's not healthy, and the fact that the show clearly has her telling Jasper no is wonderful. It's easy to go back into a pattern you are familiar with than it is to forge a future for yourself.

Man, at this point, Lapis' only episode appearance that wasn't depressing in some way was when they played baseball. That comment of the day was once again super fitting in relation to the current episode. There are some parallels to be drawn between Peridot and Jasper with how they both pulled the whole "I've changed" and "things will be different this time" card with Lapis. While Peridot was a bit pushy in her attempts to win her over, at least she agreed to give her space when asked in the end. Jasper on the other hand was extremely pushy and tried to kill her best friend when asked to leave. Whether an individual has changed for the better or not, it's still important to respect the wishes of the person they've hurt. I do think this is one of the most important episodes of the show. It's quite rare, especially for a child friendly show, to discuss such a complex issue. That "I miss her" line hits so hard every time I watch it.

One thing I love about this episode is how when it came down to responding to Jasper's question Steven just watched quietly. He didn't try to influence or push Lapis one way or another - even though he had to have wanted her to say no. He knew that it had to be HER choice, and then after she made it he helped her stick with it, but he let her make that choice first.
