This episode is always a bit of a kick to the gut. Steven wants to heal the corrupted Gems SO MUCH. He wants to help them, even when the other Gems don't think it's possible. Pearl says it's damage from the Diamonds, and though Steven's healing is powerful, it's not enough against the Diamonds' power. Centie's story is our first look at what happened at the end of the War. We know the only reason Pearl and Garnet survived the last attack was because of Rose's bubble. But they didn't describe it. Steven says "A sound--a song." And Centie draws three Diamonds. They were attacked by three Diamonds, who didn't bother to check and see who of their own forces were still on planet. This is another of my favorite episodes. And it starts to give more hints to the future. I'm still wondering if you're gonna guess what a major fan theory was at this point. The hints are there, David. :) ((Also we are SO CLOSE to some SERIOUS shit. I'm DYING))

Monster Reunion is probably one of my top favorite episodes just for how well it illustrates the heart of this series. (literally) It goes from taking a giant bug monster, to something probably a lot of people found uncomfortable when she was first introduced, and takes you on an emotional rollercoaster until I can't even imagine who could keep from being emotional when Centi's crying through her story. The heartbreak in just 11 minutes from an acid spitting bug creature. That definitely hits the heartstrings and is one of the reasons I really love this show.

One of the things I love this show does is show the Gem Rebellion not as something as glorious as Pearl said or Pearl belives it to be. Even if the Gem Rebellion was about having the freedom to be yourself without being in the servitude of Diamonds and finding individuality, there were Gems at both sides of that war. And this episode I feel really shows that, no matter what side you were on, war isn't pretty. Centipedle lost her crew, she lost other Gems that were along side her, was abandoned when the Diamonds corrupted the planet, I mean, there's just a lot of heavy stuff going on in her story. Basically, I like that we are shown some of the Darker bits of the war, and we aren't just given the pretty and heroic bits that Pearl tends to tell Steven.

I love how Centipeedle is used throughout the show. She’s so tied to Steven’s arc and growth as a character. She’s the very first corrupted gem monster to ever appear in the show, in the very first episode, the first one that Steven faces (that we’re aware of) and makes a contribution to the team by helping to defeat. She’s the first corrupted gem that he befriends, and the episode where he befriended her honestly felt like a big tone shift in the series, the first episode that really stepped away from that “monster of the week” vibe the show had before and started onto something deeper and more emotional. And when his healing powers returned, she was the first one he wanted to help. Whenever she shows up, it seems to signal another major step in Steven’s growth as a Crystal Gem, and as a maturing and compassionate human being, and I love that they did that with the very first enemy the show introduced. Also, something I noticed more on a rewatch - in Centipeedle’s second episode, after she’s been freed from her bubble, she starts reforming into that huge monster form - but when she sees Steven react in fear, that’s when she changed into the smaller monster form instead. She couldn’t heal her own corruption, but in that moment of transformation, when she saw a child in fear and in danger, she had just enough control to change herself into something less threatening. I think that speaks to something really interesting about Centipeedle herself - she’s a creature of compassion, just like Steven. She didn’t escape with the rest of the Homeworld gems because she was worried about her crew, and when Steven helped her remember what had happened to them, she was desperate to find them and reunite with them, just like Steven would be if anything happened to the Crystal Gems. No wonder they bonded - they have a lot in common.
