Hooman Reacts to Season 3 Episode 6: Gem Drill:

This episode to me is the heart of Steven Universe. There was a moment where the mission was clear you destroy them before they destroy you. I was on board. It was a threat to the Earth and it has to be dealt with. But this is where I believe Stevens super power comes in. His ability to empathize, humanize and come to Solutions without conflict is unparalleled. we just realized that the mega cluster wanted to be together. They thought the only way that they were able to find themselves was to fuse together. then Stephen created a giant bubble to save them. this episode to me kind of shows me that sometimes conflict doesn't have to resolve the conflict if you can empathize humanize, and solve the problem of the party that's agitated

So I haven't watched the full reaction yet, but I do love that you're talking about Nature Vs Nurture on THIS episode, specifically. Because as we've seen, Steven really is a nice, loveable kid. He LOVES people, he LOVES meeting new people and he's shown time and again to /choose/ kindness, even when it hurts. This brings it back to the nature vs nurture thing. Steven is, naturally, a very forgiving, kind kid. We've seen that the Gems aren't always that way. They had Lapis in the mirror for thousands of years. They chose violence against Peridot, but Steven always greeted her with a smile. The Gems, most of the time, react violently. To them, the only way to stay safe is to fight. To Steven, the only way to keep everyone safe is to try and talk it out first. He WILL defend if he has to--but remember his weapon is a SHIELD. He rarely throws the first punch, and even when he does his weapon is meant for DEFENSE. We've heard so many things about Rose. How good she was, how kind she was, how patient, loving, understanding she was. It's easy to think that Steven inherited that from her. It's easy to think she was that simple. But It's Over, Isn't It? She's gone and Steven is here. He's going to have some Bis--muth (business) to take care of, and sometimes a single pale rose is hiding more than can be seen on the surface. ~I always thought I might be bad, but now I'm sure that it's true~

In the real world, there may be times when there really is no way to resolve things peacefully. But it's often too easy to assume that we have no choice but violence, when we may just not have committed enough to finding a peaceful option. That's what I love about stories like this one. It implants the ideal that it's worth trying.
