Hi David :) Oh god I love this episode pour the Weiss part. For me, it's the peak of her evolution, the "not friends, Family" is the evolution of "I'm more than a name" back in volume 5. Thanks to her team, she was able to stand up face to her father. One thing to notice, when Jacques begins to evoke Weiss' mother, you can see Blake's expression changed fundamentally, it's because she knows these manipulation methods very well, for having been a victim with Adam. This is also why she takes Weiss's hand, she recognizes that and knows that Weiss needs to be supported. Penny over exited and Winter trying to calm her down is also refreshing to see ^^.

Mild Spoiler Alert: In answer to your question about being friends in the military, it was never said out right, but Atlas military actively brainwashes their soldiers to cut ties with family, friends and to not have "relationships" on or outside of the military. They are literally just killing machines following orders. Mr. Shnee swore to his last breath that the general "stole" his daughters, you see hints of the brainwashing throughout the rest of the seasons. Since you already saw the next episode. Weiss literally said the General GROOMED Winter. That's never a good context even in a military battle sense.

LISTEN... I have take so many selfies! Gotta take about 20+ of them and choose top 5. I check for good lighting, angles, if my smile is awkward or not, and if the selfie is blurry (my hands are shaky sometimes). I also like to take some with cute filters and stickers LOL

For the question you asked. It’s hard and sometimes you want to just walk into a situation with the equivalent of a sledge hammer and be like “this is how it’s going to be. Take it or take it”. But I truly believe that at the end of the day, the most help you can be for someone is being the person who, when everything does go to the dogs, is there to pick up the pieces after the fall out. Trying to save someone from a situation they got themselves into can lead to resentment if it happens before they’re actively doing something about it themselves / ask you for help specifically.

Little things in the episode that are easy to miss: jacque was about to hit weiss, which is why he fixed his sleeve when Ironwood stopped him. Also Ironwood says "brothers knows" instead of "God knows" which is a nice touch.

Huh. I never caught this, but it makes sense. I was going to guess that it's because the Atlas military doesn't want emotions getting in the way of following orders (ex: when you're asked to do something that would likely hurt or kill someone you love), though this would certainly play into the concept of "grooming" the soldiers. This certainly explains a lot of what happens later on in Volumes 7 and 8 (especially 8).
