What’s interesting in the RWBY universe is that Huntsmen/Huntresses are separate to the Military (aside form atlas but you’ll get to that). In our world the only monster we have to fight are each other, so we only see military as people fighting other people. Where as in the RWBY universe a Huntsmans main goal is to fight monsters and if needs be, dangerous people. Whereas the military is still kind of seen as a force which fights against another kingdoms or in this case a greater enemy. To put yourself in the place of a citizen of remnant it would be like, would you feel more comfortable seeing a superhero or an army? It’s definitely one of the ongoing themes of the RWBY series. Side note: I love the music at the end of this episode 😂

This is going to be a long comment.... The World of Remnant (RWBY), has two main types of branches to train people in (I honestly don't know what else to call it). There is the military, and the Hunters (Huntsman and Huntresses). Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Hunters are primarily trained to fight the Grimm. They unlock their auras, find their semblances, and train to hone their skills killing creatures of darkness and protecting others. That is the ideal Huntsman. Of course there are going to be others that are only in it for money and fame, but our four girls want to do it to protect people in some way, whether it be intentional or not. The Military on the other hand, are trained to fight other humans, and protect the city they reside in, not exactly everyone and anyone. They unlock their auras, but most don't have the chance to find their semblances because their training doesn't allow them to. The Military also has access to robots and mecha suits like we saw last season. Hunters aren't trained to fight other humans, because that's not what they stand for. Also, another difference is the military has a constant supply of ammunition, dust, sustenance, and shelter, while most Hunters are left without any of that for an undeterminable amount of time. When you think about it, the Hunters could be considered the "Guardians of Remnant". While the military are just the military. The ideal Hunter wants to fight the Grimm to save others, to protect others from the evil of the world. While the military is just in it to protect their own citizens. For me, having another country's military sitting at our borders would definitely not make me feel safe. It means there is something to fight, and that it requires help from another country to fight, let alone hold it off. Especially when I don't know what we're fighting. I'd rather have a selfless human being stand in front of me, than an entire army being directed to do so by some higher up. Who knows when that person decides to pull back their army, or turn on you? What if one of their soldiers turns on them? Why rely on someone who's been ordered to do so, when I can rely on someone who does it because they can, and want to?

I think there is a distinction that is unique to this world in regards to the guardian vs military question. In the world of Remnant strong emotions attract grimm and the stronger the emotions felt by more people at once in one place, the more intense that attraction gets. In the case of remnant you could make the argument that shows of force by the military only heighten these passions and emotions while a local police force and huntsman presence which is always there is more reassuring than anything. Ozpin's actions may seem lax to our standards in our world, but perhaps in Remnant keeping the people calm no matter how bad things get is the best move.

Qrow vs Winter is probably my favorite fight in the whole series. They're both exceptionally skilled, and it's an amazing display. Plus, it's a wonderful introduction to both characters.

So the 'clever little friend' cinder is talking about at the end is the computer virus she uploaded to the tower during the dance in volume two. It is symbolized as the black queen chess piece. When Ironwood used his phone during the meeting this episode, the virus spread to it creating the new access point Cinder spoke of. She then uses it to select who fights next in the tournament.

Cyr

Do you have a higher tear besides the 1$ tier? I need to give you my money because these constant uploads got me like wooo

Love the reactions, and glad to see you picked up on the smirk. (In RWBY, you learn to fear the smirk. It means someone's going down.) Ozpin's always very careful about situations that could attract the Grimm, while Ironwood's solution is to confront and defeat them - but the best way to avoid a conflict is not to attract one in the first place. In that regard, I feel Ozpin's thinking further out than Ironwood is.

Venellian

I had thought that the friend Cinder mentions was Neo or Torchwick, when I had first seen this.

the "clever little friend" was the virus she put into beacon tower. When Ironwood placed his scroll on Ozpin's desk to showcase the colosseum's defenses the virus got into his scroll. Its shown by the queen chess piece that showed up on his screen just before he picked it back up. This is one of the things I love about RWBY. There is a lot of stuff that happens, either by being said, happening right in our faces, or even going on the backround that matter and provide information that you can easily miss. Even if that was one of the more obvious examples.

I've been waiting a week for this!! One of my favorite episodes and Qrow is my favorite character!! And I really love the music during the fight! "This song features both Qrow and Winter's motifs, which are based on Ruby Rose's motif, "Red Like Roses", and Weiss Schnee's motif, "Mirror Mirror" respectively." (copied from the rwby fandom wiki)

Hey Hooman, I agree with ElevenShadows, an army vs a guardian is vastly different. Though they can do alot of the same things they dont both represent the same thing. An army can be seen as a form of defense, but then what Ozpin pointed out was the size of that army being transported across the continent... What does that symbolize? In any normal mind, it can be perceived as potential conflict of a certain magnitude, whereas a guardian can be the symbol for continuity in peace and therefore maintaining it. (IMO)

Fun fact: Qrow's been mentioned since episode one. Ruby mentions the fact her Uncle Qrow taught her how to use the scythe. And he was on Ozpin's scroll screen with a message at some other point. No picture because I guess they might not have had his design finalised at that point? idk. And Bad Luck Charm ;P Also *god* Winter is one of my favorite characters. There's so much to do an explore with her. Why she's so uptight, why she seeks perfection, and so on.... And yes, people really ship those two (including me). The two main names are Qrowin and Snowbird. As for the "clever little friend", I don't think this really counts as spoilers so much as just pointing out something that's a bit more subtle. It's all there; it can just be hard to notice. When Cinder infiltrated Beacon Tower during the V2 dance, what she was doing was installing a virus. That little black chess icon (the queen) is the virus signature. So when Ironwood put his scroll down on Ozpin's desk, she got access to at the very least his scroll, perhaps more of the military's larger networks.

I love these questions at the end and thank you again for giving much needed context! And Now I know the roles and how each of them differ I thought the military and huntsmen/huntswoman fight grim together but they have to different roles

We are wokrin on more stuff and soon! Including a philosophical based podcast which is show specific! I'm truly excited about it!

Whenever you have a small army protecting you, you feel safe, but whenever you have an entirely fleet you don’t feel protect, you feel scared. You know that something is going on that you’re not being told about and it’s VERY serious. So, you’re gonna be thinking about that and being super worried about all the possibilities as to why a whole fleet is there.

And finally, you now know, the answer to your question in volume 2, why Ozpin was not happy to see Ironwood with his fleet. Because of the unintentional message it sends. Ozpin is shown to be someone who sees people quite well, so he already knew that showing off his military might would have an unconscious effect. For the difference between army and guardian, the answer is partly given in Time to say goodbay (opening volume 2): are we heroes keeping peace? or are we weapons pointed at the enemy so someone else can claim the victory. Even if it makes more sense than that, especially with what is said just before, it embodies this difference between symbol and military, the military follow orders and are a weapon, a power used by a commander, when a guard, a hero, is a symbol of inspiration and hope. It's my opinion of course, but i think the show is on that line too. And for what makes a good leader, I think there are several important things, the ability to make decisions and act when needed, but also the ability to have an overview not just focused on one thing, all without forgetting to remain human. Jaune and Ruby demonstrate this in volume 1, during the fight against the Deathwalker and the Nevermore, against mecha Roman or even in the fight of the JNPR team in episode 2 of volume 3 in my opinion.

OMG I JUST NOTICED THE QUEEN PIECE ON IRONWOOD'S SCROLL.

davidthehooman

Even a smirk like that in real life you know something is about to go down. It could be good it could be bad, but most likely its bad!

davidthehooman

this was a wonderful comment! And I'm saving this! there is just such a wonderful, thoughtful comment! between

What makes a good leader is an interesting concept. My first thought is someone who knows when to charge and when to extend the olive branch, second is that they know "Fight to the last man" or "At all costs" is the dumbest order you can give. The other thing would be that they know how to use the people under them like how Jaune and Ruby do. They know who holds the front in a battle, who runs support and who hits where and when the enemy isn't looking (Can you tell I play too many strategy games?) and we see a lot more of this in the coming volumes so I'm excited for you to see the younger leaders evolve and grow. And finally a fun fact, Qrow's necklace is a common Nordic symbol of someone whos is mourning a loss and can signify some of the burden he bares for Ozpin
