this is my favorite episode of Avatar and your analysis is spot on imo. Having Toph be the "Devil's Advocate" here was a brilliant writing choice, and having Katara be the sort of loose end is too. Everything from here on out is masterpiece.

I think with Combustion-man it was personal. They hurt him in "The Runaway" so he's gunning for them hard, bounty or no.

I think it has to do with his ideology too, there is no undo or going back. He was hired to do his job and it will be done, like it’s an oath for him.

2023-05-06 02:07:25 YES I loved how Zuko really does still have to earn it with them, he can't just walk up and get hugs. And having Toph try to argue for Zuko since she wasn't there for most of his worst stuff in Season 1 was great too! <3 Thanks Kyle!

You are going to love the next couple of episodes. It's just gets better and better, after this really are all my favorite episodes. Season 3 is the best

Maybe it's personal, maybe it's not. I'd think he would still hunt the Avatar even if Zuko wouldn't pay him is because the Fire Lord knows Aang survived now because of the previous episode. So, he probably has a bounty for his capture/defeat once again.
