this is such a good episode! I love how they were able to tell such a touching, detailed, and nuanced story of Roku's life in just 20 minutes. It's crazy. Idk why but the whole "Friendships can transcend lifetimes" lines really get me, it's so powerful.

Great reaction! Zuko is only related Avatar Roku by blood, but not Aang. It's more that the soul of the Avatar's next life after Roku is Aang. Just a reminder that the Avatar is some "random" person in the next nation in line. Before Kiyoshi was a Water Tribe person, then Kiyoshi of Earth kingdom before Roku, Roku of the Fire Nation, Aang of the Air Nomads, and next is Water Tribe and so on. That's why Sozin knew to attack the Air Nomads to go after the next Avatar after Roku. The first Kiyoshi novel goes into some more details on how they find the next Avatar, though it's touched on in Book One, in 'The Storm'. And it's apparently similar to how they find the next Dalai Lama.

Love your reactions! Idk if u noticed but the scene between zuko and iroh although iroh was in a cell, the camera angles kept making it as if it was zuko who’s locked up symbolizinghis struggle. Fun fact: the first scene where Romy trips because of the tree, sozin helps him then let’s him fall foreshadowing the ending

I wonder if Kyle noticed that Iroh has a different voice actor now? RIP Mako

I did notice, the new guy is doing a remarkable job voice matching but you can tell its a different person

Oh woahh! I didn't realize at the time but you're totally right about the cell perspectives, and that foreshadowing with the tree is cool! That's something you'd only catch the second time

There is no familial bond between the Avatars. The only way in which Zuko is related to Aang is that he's the great-grandson of a previous embodiment of the Avatar Spirit.

From a filmmaking perspective, this episode is incredible. There are several wonderful camera angle and framing choices (even though it's animation) that are done as a directorial choice to help with another layer of storytelling. If you notice the scene near the end when Zuko confronts Iroh, they place the "camera" inside the cell with Iroh which gives the appearance that Zuko is the one behind bars and trapped (metaphorically speaking) as opposed to Iroh, who has always been free because he clearly understands everything and has a more open understanding of the larger story that Zuko struggles with. Even the lighting has Iroh much more illuminated while Zuko is shrouded in darkness. It's a beautiful moment, one of many, that make this show so incredible.
