A counterpoint to your argument about the last time Vessar seeing his children being pre-season 1, when they were still selfish assholes, would be to point out the factors that made them that way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (He’s always been awful to them, resenting them for their parentage when he himself slept with their human mother. He’s definitely not a good dude)

I do agree that Syldor Vessar was much more than a mustache twirling villain, he has a lot of depth and nuance to him. Most of that is down to how amazing Matt Mercer is at storytelling and characterization, but the piece de resistance (sorry french fans, I am not taking the time to get all the little accents right lol) comes from Troy Baker himself really diving into the character and giving him that extra level of depth and humanity (for lack of a better term) in the brief time onscreen he has between this episode and episode 3's flashback scenes. Troy actually talks about that quite a bit in the Critical Role live watch party for this episode, where he's a guest with other members of the cast as they watch along. It's a fascinating look behind the curtain a little bit, if you're into that kind of thing with voice actors and fleshing out their characters and whatnot.
