both adi and damien have reactivity issues, especially when surprised. adi has it worse due to his battling/hero days which made him hypersensitive. damien has lingering reactivity due to the treatment post mutation. essentially damien and adi were locked up, prodded, and treated both like a test subject and a criminal for a while before being released and given an "apology" for the mistreatment. damien was given much better treatment due to him appearing more human and being able to speak, while adi was essentially treated like a rabid beast. still they had no privacy for a few months, small rooms, and family all but abandoned them. due to such treatment they both had to survive and make compromises to ensure some form of comfort. 

it led to adi joining the mutant hero program, and damien being considered his 'tamer' due to adi having a natural affection for him. adi was very scared alot of the time, he was no stranger to being combative, defensive, and overall violent. but when Damien was around, adi is more likely to hide behind damien, or seek comfort instead. so the humans made them a team, where damien gives adi orders, instead of a stranger. ultimately adi was doing the bidding of the higher ups who wanted to take advantage of adi's supernatural strength and regenerative abilities. damien was considered to participate in the hero program bit he staunchly refused, so much so that he became violent at the mere thought of doing such a thing. adi was differetn due to him loving destruction as an after effect of mutation, so being a hero helped adi quell his tendencies, but damien had no such thing. irt was already hard to compromise and have adi be used at all, and damien ultimately being used too.... but being a hero? saving people? he had no heart for that. damien lost a lot of his humanity post mutation. he hates humans even more due to his and adi's treatment at their most vulnerable and shocked. being handled like monsters rather people. 

unlike adi, damien is vicious, only appearing docile due to his lack of care, not cause he had morals. adi retained his humanity and love for people, despite the abuse. he always wanted to help people and save them, so this was like a dream, even if it was harsh. 

anyways, because of those two things, adi and damien dont like surprises, much less anything that will shock them into a defensive/violent reaction. but adi does love to give him a good morning and get damien a strong awakening, knowing that he can dodge any incoming attacks.
