What merits a coming of age marking? Is it simply "you turn [age]", or is it more of a ritualistic or traditional completion of something like a challenge?

its definately mostly an age, but it also means that you completed the right of passage, such as what mako completed. (being able to hunt, craft, strategize, live on your own, as well as learn to use skills taught effectively)
