002 learned how to speak largely by the humans, but always remembered the first words 001 said to him. 001 was reprimanded in talking to 002, waltzing in so confidently to see him. he could only see him, not talk to him, but 001 did say and even touched 002.

he wasnt allowed to catch a glimpse till months later, and only try to communicate through a connection with zero's telepathy.

so to explain some more... 002’s nightmare is a reoccurring one, where he sees the first time 001 gets punished. He was only a week old so it deeply affected him. He couldn’t even articulate words to describe the feelings and what he saw. The concept of a gun” wasn’t there yet, but he knew that this situation wasn’t right. He kept on hearing about punishments and trouble so he had an idea that the words meant “bad”. 

it only got worse as time went on and he understood more and more. The flashbacks came and he never stopped remembering that seared fear . It was like it was stamped with a hot poker on him.
01 was calm which made 002 even weirded out, wondering what the hell is happening, and what this means. But he knows now that 01 was calm because he promised to obey in order to keep zero safe, even if that means taking bullets to the head.
