I'm thrilled to bring you a half slip pattern that will become a staple in your lingerie wardrobe! Vintage dresses were hardly ever lined because women owned lovely silk slips, which would save time, money, and fabric (instead of spending the time and fabric budget to line every skirt and dress they made). Slips also deserve a place in the conversation about sustainable sewing: They are a beautiful eco-friendly alternative to buying lining fabric for every project you sew. (For dresses like the Stanwyck Dress, I like to line the bodice only and then wear a slip instead of lining the skirt.)

When designing this slip, I looked not only to vintage lingerie but to designers like Carine Gilson who make the most luxurious French lingerie (ever wonder why a slip would cost $800? Watch this video! Not only is it inspiring, but it gives you a sense of the tradition and skill involved in high-end lingerie.) I designed the silhouette of the Sweetheart Slip to work under your slimmest pencil skirts, but the bias allows it to stretch for comfort. The lace trim is a gorgeous accent.

The other thing that excites me about this project is that it will teach you all sorts of lingerie sewing skills: cutting on the bias, a picot elastic waistband, sewing Chantilly lace trim, cutting slippery fabrics like silk charmeuse, and sewing beautiful French seams.

I hope you love sewing this project! Download the instructions and pattern files at the bottom of this post  (note the separate files for A0 and tiled home printing; see the instructions file for more information) and make sure to watch the video in my separate post. Use the hashtag #sweetheartslip when sharing your makes. And don't forget to watch the video in my separate post!

xoxo,

Gertie
