In terms of sheer story telling, what comes close to One Piece, if there anything that does?

I think One Piece is 1st. After that, Berserk is the closest for me, then Kingdom & Tower of God, then maybe HxH. I haven't read Vegabond or Vinland or FMA, and I dropped AoT about half way through, so I can't say anything about those.

I don't think anything does personally. Definitely nothing in western media. There's some masterpieces out there, but just in terms of storytelling, nah none. The closest I would say is Breaking Bad. As for anime/manga, the only shonen I think is pretty close is AoT. And a handful of seinen series as well that come close too like Kingdom, Berserk, Vinalnd, Vagabond. One Piece is definitely #1 and these 5 or 6 series I named are the only ones that come to a close 2nd.

If you're talking about world building and lore then it's hard to name something because One Piece has a huge advantage over being so long. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is something that I would put up there. If you are talking about good writing and characters then there's plenty. Nana, Ping Pong the Animation, Rose of Versailles, Shiki, Gankutsuou, March comes in like a lion, etc.
