Yesterday we went to visit the Frida Kahlo Museum, which was formerly hers and her husband’s, (Diego Rivera), house. Her family lost the home when she was younger and Diego bought it back as a wedding gift to her.

I never knew much about Frida, only that there were famous paintings and photos of her and I don’t think I even knew she was the artist until recently.

This one is by photographer Nikolas Muray, who was one of the pioneers of color photographs. He also was one of Frida’s many lovers. They were on and off for 10 years, both having affairs, as did Frida’s husband, Diego. but we’re still friends up until her death.

I also had no idea she had polio as a child and was also in a severe bus accident later on, which resulted in her having to wear up to 7-10 back braces at times. She was in constant pain and because of that, became addicted to opioids and was also depressed. So many artists suffer from mental and physical pain, and I truly believe that in a twisted way, that pain becomes inspiration. Other people can connect to pain so deeply because at one point of another, we all feel it.

This is her daybed, where she ultimately passed away. On top of the bed is her actual death mask. You can see a mirror above the bed. This is what she used to see herself for her self portraits.

And on her night bed, was butterflies.

Seeing her art room was a type of spiritual experience. To know that so much feeling came out of this room and through these mediums, made walking through feel like so much more than a simple exhibit.

I have a lot more to share, so I’ll try to get more up soon!

That is so awesome to be able to see all of that behind the scenes things of her life. To be able to hear about her story and see her art sounds so moving.
