Jake is a well spoken guy. I’d definitely like to see more of him in future episodes.

Hey guys, that was an really interesting episode. I just wanted to discuss the idea that token decks are a split deck made up of both token producers and pump effects. I think that you guys are right in this view when it comes to more casual token decks, but this strategy doesn’t work at higher power levels. At power level 7-8 token decks do not play many pump effects because there isn’t room in the deck to do so. The main goal of higher level token decks is just to, as you say, spend tokens as currency. I suppose it’s the classic blunder of deck building, trying to stick to more than one idea. It’s why Syr Gwyn decks are so hard to build. The deck wants both Knights and Equipment and therefore runs into the problem of not drawing both parts of the deck. Therefore, just like many other decks the token decks have to stick to one idea only, which is making a bunch of tokens to spend as currency. I don’t mean to come of negatively, but I think it’s a common misconception of what makes a good token deck.

Great episode! I am going to share the video with my brother in law when it is released to the public as he is very new to magic the gathering/commander. I am currently building an eldrazi tribal deck led by Morophon, the Boundless. Morophon is a great 5 color commander to start with as it decreases the casting cost of creatures and puts a +1/+1 counter on creatures of the chosen type. An awesome tribal commander that accesses all the colors in a single tribe!

I absolutely loved this episode. It gave me a few ideas when it came to deck construction, but also reminded me of a project I had been working on and shelved with the covid crisis: Training decks. These would be decks that would be easy for players new to magic to pick up and learn with. Simple mechanics, easy to understand the goal of the deck without having to read every card. This episode reminded me of this attempt and has restored some interest in this project again. (Sadly this was meant to be brought to LGS's and help people interested in the games they saw. LGS random play doesn't seem to be a thing for the foreseeable future). It also is one of a few deck types I feel you missed in decks everybody should make. I feel that building decks that are easy for new players to learn with/simple decks help you learn more about what is needed and what isn't in deck construction and is a kind of return to fundamentals. Usually this can be your iconic Krenko Mob Boss Goblin deck. Easy mechanically, hits the ground running, but also focus on stripping out complicated mechanics and rules.

Josh I enjoy the episode. plus really happy Jake pointed at the fact when it comes to taking thing apart and putting it back together really make you feel awesome, to me it help a bunch learning to see what makes things tick and function, that may be the reason I try to fix game system or other electronics devices, also on magic the gathering been buy a bunch of commander deck learning and figure out the reason wizard of the coast build those decks.

well I messed up on that one was going to continue to say Happy your doing a subject on building deck at least once, Cause I been doing it with my good buddy jeff which we do in arena and also some what kinda broke the game a couple of time with that token commander and some other commanders even golos with an overflow of triggers and tokens and landfalls and kicker you know I'll just say etc. My Deck is Almost done Just need a Brash Taunter and it will be ready, this deck is actually going to be fun for this deck will play around base power and same with my enemies, may even turn there stuff into snakes or my commander into a frog just for riku who is a human gain some non human triggers thanks to Oko the trickster who really help me find the pieces i need to create this deck and thus will test it on my buddies on Wednesday. -_- since the tibalt kind of went a bit too nasty, hope the best for you guys In the Command zone.

Me just thought about something, Josh wouldn't it be a good Idea to ask the fans for a deck list of there commander decks that will be piloted by you or people in the command zone, so that way people who might not be there would at least get to see there decks in game knights.

Awesome episode gentlemen! Been playing since March so I can play with the ‘kids’ every now and then and on the holidays. The kids are in their 30’s. Played a ton on Arena and some in person commander with them. This episode was perfect! Want to learn? Build one of these and learn this; then build this and learn this. Great stuff!

Great episode! I stumbled upon a commander just before watching this that will put me in mono white AND hidden commander. I’ve got some brewing to do :)

Thank you for this episode! It was fun to see that I have already built a few of these (with different commanders) and I will say that my “commanderless” deck and my counters deck are my favorite to pilot. I have too many decks that rely heavily on the commander being on the board (gishath, rin and seri, etc.) so I’m constantly having to protect my commander, which is frustrating. My commanderless deck has Elsha, the Infinite as the commander, mainly because I started with Wiil Kenrith and Rowan Kenrith as partner commanders and liked what they did, but wanted access to white spells because that’s my “emotional support color”
