The "pushing the boundaries" conversation reminds me of the aftermath of the Urza's back in the late 1990's. After the high power level and the banning/restricting of many cards from that block, the sets after that (like Mercadian Masques, as you mention) really pulled back and explored only in a very narrow and safe space. It was an unremarkable era of MTG, where the game may have felt stale and players lost interest, up until the Mirrodin block (another very problematic time). I would rather the designers offer innovative ideas like companion, mutate, etc. than retreat into safer, already-explored space.

This is an excellent way to think about it and well thought-out. Thanks for sharing! -JLK

JLK, Josh, another great Questions episode. Thank you, again!! I'd like to piggyback off of Peter's comment. We don't want WotC Card Designers to become gun-shy and then not push the limits of their creativity. However, we should not expect defective products from WotC either. This is not a trade that we, the players, should have to face. By choosing quality over quantity, we can still have both: tested products and amped creativity. WotC has said that they don’t have the resources to test properly and push creativity at the same time. They can do both. They just need more time to do so. They can test properly and push creativity but they can’t in the artificial timelines that they have set for themselves. This is a deliberate internal business decision. They need to slow down the number of products they release per year. From a money-making perspective, this may not make sense. If they stay the current course, they will have short-term gains but their core fan-base will slowly erode over time because of lack of confidence in their product. So … sometimes slow is smooth and smooth is fast. What do I mean by this? I know this is the Year of the Commander per Gavin, but I would rather have 3-4 solid-quality products release per year than eight inferior-quality products and I'm using the number of bans as a metric of success/failure. Expanding time between product release will do several things: a) allow designers to maximize their creative impulse and better coalesce more sound and playable cards and mechanics; b) allow for more testing to ensure better, quality control, in multiple formats; b) c) allow players to revel and enjoy sets to the fullest before premature rotation/displacement; and d) allow for longer product print runs which will have a direct impact on the availability of products, ensuring price stabilization and mitigate against price gouging on the secondary market. By making the deliberate business decision to choose quality over quantity, everyone gains in long-run. Just like everything in life, there needs to be a better balance. Right now, WotC is peddling too fast and the chain is starting to come off the bike. BTW: If WotC can dedicate personnel for a “Council of Colors”, they should also be able to figure out how to dedicate testing advocates for all of the rotating and eternal formats.

TL, DR: Slow the number of products per year to allow for more testing AND pushed creativity.
