Commander games are much more fun when all of the decks in a pod are at a similar power level. But how do you determine, before the game, if your deck is on par with the others? How do you rank it on our 1-10 scale? Those are the questions we’re tackling on this episode.

perfect timing for my Zacama deck in trying to build

My Ramses Overdark deck was definitely Casual. It had a plan... only problem was, the plan wasn't one that had a lot of support in UB, and even when the plan worked, it wasn't that great. I'd be like "enchant your creature and destroy it and maybe gain control of it, hehehehe," and my opponent would give me a skeptical look and then kill me somehow on the next turn

This is so helpful wish i knew this before command fest

I usually build decks around the 7 power level. Not unbeatable but makes you feel good when you triumph over it.

Our group had a various definitions for "fun" decks so we needed a better way to communicate. We liked DJs scale. We also tried to add some pseudo science so from the stats episode and we looked at assigning Expected Win Percentage (EWP) to Decks, like is done in some sports. 25% was Casual, 50% for Focused, 75% for Optimized, then Jank and Competetive were the end caps. We also used general number of opponents that are usually killed when a deck goes off. We have some players who have Decks that consistently kill everyone all at once and we have decks that simmer and only work to survive then take the last person out 1v1. Finally, we use a "Flag" system borrowed from the wet bulb globe temperatuyre system, as a visual Deck Threat Advisory system. If your deck has a black sticker, its competitive, red = Optimized, amber = focused, green = casual, white = sub-optimized. This seems to work for our meta.

Here's a table that we used to translate between DJ's tiering, the Command Zone's 1-10 scale, and our group's Flag threat advisory system. (https://www.facebook.com/FortMeadeMTG/photos/a.1000331873510305/1199758736900950/?type=3&theater)

Great episode guys, just another point to working out your power level, you should try playing the deck solo ie not against another deck to see how your draws work and mana base works ect, I’ve played in many different pods and have found if your playing against better opponents and you so happen to have the “weaker” deck you may barely win or only get to your win cons a lot later then with a different group, so just we aware not to let your pod dynamic overly influence your own scaling

The discussion about tutors and how it affects power level is something my groups been grappling with. We all make it a point to not run tutors, but when we bring our decks to public play environments we feel bad and have started classifying our decks as 8s because they feel too powerful.

You didn't call out a patron's name! Did a name get picked? What if it was me? <:-o
