I'd heard that self-serve wasn't very common so this is pretty interesting. We're considering whether to rent a car next time we visit, so this is good info. I've never driven in Japan (or on the left side) so this is one more hurdle to pass.

Is the Fare Adjustment Machine only for when you overpay at the pump?

Every station is different, so it's hard to answer accurately. But yea, I think the way that one worked (excuse my poor memory) was you put in more cash than you expect to need just to start the pumping and then get change from the machine? It's a goofy system really. Most fun is our credit cards never seem to work at gas stations and we have no idea why hahahah. -E

Oh yea, self-serve is becoming a little more common. If you rent a car here (and you should to explore further off the usual path in some areas!) just make sure you have cash on hand for the fuel in case your credit card doesn't work. It's a weird chronic problem. Otherwise if you run into trouble the staff will always help, it's never a disaster. Btw, driving on the left side is no biggie, you adjust quickly. -E
