That mic sounds much better! I just got a Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun after watching a bunch of reviews.. its good but a bit impractical for run and gun filming.

I believe the bugs you saw are called horseflies. We have them here and they are quite big compared to regular flies and they will take a chunk of flesh out of you if you've ever been bitten by one. When I was living at a ranch, I got bit and whacked it really hard. It fell to the ground, shook it off, then flew away. Nasty, nasty bugs and tough too. No wonder those ponies were bolting when they got bit. (bit, not stung)
